This is certainly not a big deal and I don't want to make it such, it always amazes me how something as small as finding a 68 year old nickel in your pocket change can make you smile. Found this morning... a genuinely circulated beauty in my books.

One reason I enjoy coins is because they can act like time machines. This coin, for example, was minted before my parents met. Just think of all the different people who have looked at it in the last 68 years. And now we're included in that group.

I did the same thing this weekend. I found a 39 Jefferson in my change. I ended up giving it to my friend who just started collecting this summer he was amazed that a 30's coin could still be circulating and look like most nickels out there.

I can remember, as a kid, my grandfather and father emptying their pockets of change for me and telling me anything I find for my collection I can keep. So when I find something like this in my pocket it always brings those memories back.
Rest in Peace

I get ridiculously happy when I find a really old coin in my change. I never thought about it until I read this thread that the reason is because that's how I started hoarding coins decades ago. But it's got to be the reason.

My wife is the lucky one in our family. She's not a collector but she has a good eye for old coins she gets in her change...

The neatest thing I've seen, is a cashier co-worker of mine pulled a 1916 six pence outta his dime bin. I couldn't believe that a sterling six pence had been floating around so long here in America taking the place in our system hiding as a dime. Epic! :)
I gladly explained what it was to him and he happily pulled it out to keep.

I too get great enjoyment out of finding old coins in change.
I always think back to what was happening at the time it was minted and as stated how many hands through history have touched the coin.

Wow, I've never gotten a SLQ in change! I have gotten Buffalos and Mercuries (both many, many years ago), but never an IHC or SLQ.

Think about how many criminals have touched your coins. I bet a lot. or none. or 21.
