I apologize for all the posts as I am still learning but any idea what these strange marks are. They look like the edge of the quarter gouged into the front.

There are many things that routinely damage a coin: Gumball Machine turnstiles, coin rollers, clothes drier...road surfaces. Over time, you'll be able to label a few at a glance. Your specimen here is probably a damaged coin but you may to familiarize yourself with lamination errors. Some apparent gouging may in fact be a lamination error. Here's one to consider -

The one on the bottom seems to be part of the bust when I look under magnification. Most damage looks like damage but this is strange.

The one by the eye looks to be reeding damage from another coin, so the bottom one may be that as well. PSD

Can you see any fissures extending beyond the ends of the gouge?
