I found a 1975 South African proof set in their original box for like $25 at a flea market. I was wondering if there was anything special in it like silver coins etc. I like the coins but seems steep since they all are toned. Are such sets counterfeited a lot? I'm having troubles finding a good value for one online.

I didn't pay much attention to the set that day besides checking to see if all the coins were still there. I usually don't collect many world coins but the two boxes gave me enough pause to look at them do never seeing a set like that before. I also found out got a lot of decent deals from his US coins.

If they're not silver, they're nickel - but nickel doesn't really tone at all. I'm thinking silver.

Tone doesn't really detract from the value, if it's a result of the packaging then all the sets will be like that.

Go back and get it, the worst that happens is that you're out $25. But I think these will be real and worth the price - even if they're nickel, they will certainly have a higher value if they're in an original mint set.

I'm starting to think the set is a 1965 looking at it online at the design atleast from memory.

The coins are silver but they aren't the ones with ugly toning. The copper coins are toned horribly. The weird thing is that the mint packaged them where the coins wasn't in any sort of flip or protection. Just loose sitting in a wood box haha.

It's cool but I was hoping for maybe a gold coin in there, which did come packaged with the 1975 set but not the 1965. However over time the gold coins usually go missing from those sets.

I will look at again when I go Friday but as cool as it may be I can't justified paying $25 unless the silver value is near that amount or over. My coin budget is too low haha. Online a 1965 goes for about $35 with all it's coins. It the 1975 set is complete its like $650. Without the gold coins it's like $40.

The South African proof sets without the 2 gold coins are refered to as short proof sets. Both the 1965 and 1975 sets contain a silver 1 rand coin, the balance are nickel and copper. The silve R1 has 80% silver and the coin should weigh 15.0 grams. The 1965 set retails at R600 and the 1975 one at R350.

I will check tomorrow if I have a chance to go there. He had like five South African sets. I only looked at it since I had never seen one before. I looked at set and they were definitly unlike US proof sets. If I can find one of the ealier sets or definitly a long set I will get it. The set look interesting but took up a large amount of room and I always worry that I couldn't sell foriegn coins later if I wanted to except by the pound here. Dealers hate foriegn coins here unless they have gold or silver.

I'm always nervous to spend my money from my budget on anything but my main collections. Silver Rosie's, Buffalo nickels, Mercury dimes, and to a lesser extent my 7070.
