Picasa (through Google) is software you can install on your machine to create and update photo albums (here's the help page for more info) - and you can also upload them to Google's servers after you organize them into albums. They have some pretty good rates for online storage past the initial free space. You can download Picasa here. You can set it to sync between your offline and online albums, which is handy.
If you are a Google+ member you may not be able to use Picasa to do the uploading, but G+ has its own interface to upload photos with.
Photobucket and Flickr are other places you can store photos online. In both, you can create folders and organize the images as you see fit. Most of these sites will compress the images, resulting in lesser quality and size, unless you go with a Pro account. They should be sufficient unless you want to store huge images.
I like to use Photobucket as you can give the image both a title and as many comments as you like. So you can give it a title then just keep adding information such as purchase date and amount, then where it's stored or if you gifted it, etc.
If you're going to store them online just be aware that the images could be quite large and eat up the free space quickly. To help make the space stretch further, resize the image so it is smaller and set the quality to be a bit less; doing that can make a lot of difference in file size. I use a GIMP/Photoshop plugin to do mine in batches.
Here's a good comparison of the online photo storage sites: http://www.cnet.com/how-to/comparin...otos-online/
If you want strictly offline, you can try Picasa as mentioned above or see if your printer came with free software (check your printer's web site, as well). Sometimes they come with album-making software you can use. Hopefully someone else who has used some other good software will chime in here.
