Hello,

This is my first time posting. I have several coins that I got from my great grandma and grandpa's farm back in 1997 when my great grandmother died in 1997 at the age of 98 years old. My great grandpa would find things out on his farm in Illinois and built a pretty amazing collection of native American artifacts and a couple of coins he found in his farm fields. My pictures are below and I do not see an R (for replica) next to the 1776 like the post below on my coin. Can anybody help me figure out if this coin is genuine? Thanks for the Help in advance.

Green,

Welcome Green! Your coin appears to be a Continental Currency "Dollar" of 1776. If it was real, it would be worth quite a bit. However, it's far more likely to be a replica as many replicas were made. Here are links to more information... http://coinquest.com/cgi-bin/cq/coi...in_coin=3789, http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/Col...ollar.1.html I don't see anything that clearly suggests your coin is real or a replica - others here may have a more expert opinion. Whatever you do, don't attempt to clean it!

When looking at a coin that is potentially worth 5 figures, it is always best to assume that it's a replica/counterfeit until you can prove otherwise. Your coin doesn't match most images I found online, but multiple dies were used for these coins. To further complicate, these coins are pattern coins and struck in a variety of metals ranging from silver to copper to tin. I would post this in the US classic coin forums and take the coin to your local coin shop... they should be happy to give their opinion for free.

The odds of this being a genuine 18th century pattern coin are pretty remote, but it is absolutely worth checking.

It would help if you could post larger and higher resolution photos. Many fakes are cast, and we can probably determine if this is cast or not with better photos.

Welcome to the forums.

Welcome to the CCF.
Your coin is one of the many cast replicas floating around.
The bumpy surfaces and devices are a dead giveaway.
