I am on autoship for the advertised 20 pack graded Presidential dollars. It costs me $58 with shipping to get 20 graded 63+ in a sealed container for each President D and P. I cannot open the container or the grading is useless.

Can I get some opinions on whether I should cancel this? Thanks.

Welcome to Coin Community, taft71.

Nothing from HSN is a worthwhile purchase. Nothing. You're going to pay $58 for $20 worth of coins, and chances are anything you get in a roll from the bank will be 63+, so you cannot infer any collector value whatsoever from them. Add $2, and get $60 worth of them from the bank, instead of $20. It's unlikely, since they're minting so many, that any but the very few finest examples of each will carry any value beyond face. That doesn't mean that there won't be a herd of sheeple on ebay, eager to get fleeced by the greasy sellers willing to hype something which isn't true. It'll happen, just like it is with the "error" Presidential dollars, and the State Quarters before them, and the ASE's before them.

Welcome taft71 to a great forum. I wish I could tell you SuperDave is wrong, unfortunately I cannot he is right on the money. (No pun intended) I do hope you enjoy your stay here. HSN and the similar companies have been taking advantage of collectors for all to long. We have people here who live all over the world as well as different parts of the country and people do trade Denver mint for Philly all the time etc.

Thanks for your input. I just cancelled my autoship with HSN. I guess I'll hold onto what I have received. Thanks again

Any numismatic item from the State Quarters on up through the gold coins recovered from the SS Central America that are adverted on TV are a complete ripoff. They have to pay their ridiculous advertising fees, high overhead, usurious profits to shareholders etc. so the result is overpriced merchandise. Avoid anything numismatic that is advertised on TV like the bubonic plague.

Oner more question. If I wanted to continue collecting these dollars what is the best way to do it? Proof sets? No experience here, so I ask the experts. And where is the best place to buy them?

Welcome Taft,

If you want to pursue collecting then there are several ways. If you are interested in proofs then you can by them directly from the US Mint http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ory_rn=16238

Another option is to buy what is known as a Presidential dollar album from either Dansco, Lighthouse, or Whitman. The albums have spaces and labels for each coin so you know which ones to get. You then just go to your local bank and ask if they have any new Presidential dollars and then put it in your album.

If you are interested in the hobby there are some very good links on the left hand side menu bar under "Navigation".

Good Luck!

Your best bet for collecting these in non-Proof Business Strike form is your local bank. Of course, they'll only have one or the other mint mark in stock. So, what you do is stick around Coin Community and accumulate 50 good posts. That makes you eligible to do transactions in our Buy, Sell and Trade forums, where you can get with members who have access to the coins you need, and who won't charge you an arm and a leg for the privilege.

I'm not saying the Presidential dollars are not collectible. I'm ensuring that I have one of each, as well, just like the State Quarters. I just don't see them as having any value over face.

Welcome to the forum taft,

If you are interested in obtaining a proof set, the US Mint offers a 4 coin presidential set. The set is priced at 14.95. I would purchase that set directly from the Mint. The Web site is https://www.USMINT.gov.

I really prefer the look of the proofs to the business strikes, at least with the modern coins. When you are at the US Mint website you may want to consider the year sets. The 4 coin proof Presidential dollar set runs $14.95, for an extra $12 you can buy the proof 2007 year set, which includes the State Quarters & the other circulating coinage for the year.

I'm offended by the negative response to HSN,
the Haven for Suckers & Nitwits.
They sometimes do have good deals.
Didn't SuperDave get his online degree from there?
