IMHO, possibly the 1845 at about that price. At this level, I much prefer seeing a coin-in-hand. Many of the higher grade coppers have been doctored.

What's the reason you guys think they're not up to $250?
Should that price buy an MS coin rather than au?

The first and last coins might have the technical merit for the price, but for $250 I'm expecting a better-looking Large Cent than this. MS-62 or 63, with above-average eye appeal, should be possible for this money. They're out there. Patience.

Nope, you just have to do a *lot* of looking. There's a ton of good coins in the Internet. Just for the heck of it, after my last post I wandered over to Harlan Berk's website, one of the online dealers I frequent. They had two AU50 Large Cents I liked at the grade and price, an 1838 and an 1850. The 1838 has verdigris to deal with, probably an expert coin, but the 1850 was rather nice. Either for about half your budget.
I'm om JJ Teaparty's site right now - saw a couple of promising AU 1845's so far.

I see what you're saying. There are au cents out there, some are even slabbed and graded, at some of the sites I've visited lately, for about half my looking price. Maybe I'm going about it the wrong way, but I'm looking for a $250 Braided hair large cent. Not one that someone is just trying to pass off as a high grade coin. I know there are problem free au55 coins out there for just over 100 bucks, but I'm trying to find a slightly higher grade. I think part of my trouble is that I'm decieved by the photography. Doing an ebay search for uncirculated braided hair large cents "buy it now" in the 180 to 275 dollar range turns up mostly problem coins and and au coins.

I was down in the basement mancave, looking at the coins on my phone. Upstairs on the PC I like the second 1853 better than I did, and the 1845 is even better which makes the big black spot at 12:00 high all the worse. But for that spot, the 1845 would seriously tempt me at $250. I like the first 1853 less.
You're familiar with Heritage Auctions, right? They're my go-to coin sale archive, especially in the price range you're talking. Membership on their site is free, and gives you access to the most amazing archive of prior sales on the Internet. They have sold 30,000 Large Cents alone.
It is from their auction results that I believe you can do a nice-at-the-grade Mint State Large Cent for $250.

Oh. I had no idea of that. I will definitely register with them.
I thought they only dealt with very very expensive rare high grade coins.
Coin #1 was my favorite, but from what you guys are telling me, I should be able to get something better.
