Hello, A coin to share with all of you, my latest purchase. The style seems to be provincial imo, maybe Hispania (looking at minerva and the bust of Claudius) but I'm not sure. It's in a very good condition and a keeper for me! RIC 100 - 12,88gr 28mm Claudius AE As. TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR IMP, bare head left / S-C across field, Minerva standing right, brandishing spear and holding shield on left arm. Cohen 84.

It is indeed crudely made, perhaps a imitation or a cast copy.

This type was very commonly imitated in ancient Britain. The imitations range from nearly indistinguishable from originals to very crude and much smaller than originals. Take a look at some here: http://esty.ancients.info/imit/imitclaudius.htmlThe type is also available as a modern cast imitation in museum shops in England. These usually have an obvious casting seam around the edge, since the museums are not attempting to deceive. However, yours seems to me to be ancient. The weight is enough for an original. The style is not unusually crude. Call it original and be pleased with a nice coin.

The provincial mints in Spain were closed down when Claudius assumed power. The issues which remained were solely of the Imperial types. The style is quite in line with the Spanish issues.

i thought it looked a little strange at first...but all good. now that you guys mention it, I think I can see the "iberian style" of the coin.

thanks all for your comments. I have been searching in the fake report databases but no hit at all. No seam or something, the right weight.. so it seems to be the real deal!

When I 'dumped' most of my silver back in the eighties I used the proceeds to buy Julio Claudian AE's. This As is possibly an Iberian type although it has a strong Rome issue look about it. The all too handsome portrait leads me to think Spain. This curiousity I found for sale in France. I believe the seller found it himself. He was asking $40 and I offered $30. Much to my surprise he accepted ! Then proceeded to scalp me on shipping ...... Seriously underweight and the very 'Gallic' looking portrait screams "unofficial" mint Constantia looks as if she is saying " Go away ! Or I will taunt you a second time ! "

The first reverse says, "it is hard to fight in an evening gown."
The second reverse says, "What, What bring it."
