I recently looked at a vf-20 coin with light scratch on it I wondered how much the price on a coin like this is lowered as the price for this grade is in the 1000s.

Can you define "light scratch"? Just assuming it isn't very obvious then I would have to say it wouldnt affect its value much. MS coins have light scratches just from the minting process alone.

Many coins are 'pricy,' but not necessarily 'rare.'
I contend the 'rarer' the coin, the more forgiving the damage.
i.e., A damaged 1948 DOLLAR will decrease considerably in value,
whereas the same damage on a 1889 or 1893 (Round Top) 10 CENT coin
would command near full value.

yes scratches can occur even before the coin is struck! and during the striking of the coin, and during distribution of the coins! VIA bags boxes or rolls!

VF20--light scratch--3000---save your money.
Go for a Fine grade --no scratches--- a coin that will not disappoint you every time you look at it---if a grader has problems with it, so do you.

the light scratches on this coin was caused by a parking meter.there are very, very few known according to ICCS. from the comments the value is in the eye of the person who likes the coin.

Completely agree. The depth of the scratch and the placing also plays a key part. For example: A coin with a scratch around the will rim will command a much higher price than a scratch right across the portrait (especially the face) or through the date.

This is a set of pictures of the coin but not as clear as I would like as it is hard shooting through 2 layers of plastic.
