See the picture of the coin and close up of the date,

five in the date. Thanks in advance. Matt you may
recognize this coin.

Interesting die chip or doubling ? , also what is going on at the back of the seven just above the tail?

Glad you like them! I didn't notice the extra metal. I hope it turns out to be a scarce variety!

This is a die chip that gradually grew until it looks like the bar of the 5 is doubled.... it is relatively common and Zoell catalogued it as H459n in its early die state and H459q in its late die state.

Many thanks for this reference @pginrh;
Would you say that this was early or late die state,
or is it too gradual to discern?

@Pacificoin, could be a re-punched 7,
will take a closer look with the loupe.

So I looked with the loupe; no repunch 7 just a ding,
and there is extra metal under the CE in CENTs and in
the A's of CANADA. See close ups of those areas.
Is it a mortar set? (A type of deteriorating die doubling.)
All the extra metal is on the 6 o'clock side of the
letters.

This extent of the die chip doubling of the bar of the 5 on this coin is about the middle die state ....

The die chips under the 'CE' is catalogued by Zoell as P459d and is found on just about all the 1957s with the 'doubled' bar of the 5.

Not sure why but the 1957 and 1958 are prone to die chips, probably because of a really sharp edge on the letters and numbers of 'CANADA 195x' that is prone to break down... Usually on 1958 coins they will show up as 'caps' on letters and date digits.

The top ones I used a Nikon D3000 with manual focus and bright sunny day.
The first obverse is from the guy who traded it to me, and the second is
at night with my Nikon under yellowish lighting, not bad for a hand held
no flash at 1/30th sec. All the close ups are zoomed in from the top
photo and cut and pasted screen-dumps using Microsoft Office 2010 and Paint.
