well, you guys have kind of got me more into medieval and islamic coins lately, so I picked up a couple cheapies. less than 25 bucks for both, but seem like pretty cool coins.

I'm not familiar with this coin, just picked it up for dirt cheap so didn't ask any questions until I got it. I'm not absolutely certain of my attribution. also, I got the obverse and reverse mixed up. the obverse is right, and the reverse is left.

holy roman empire
archbishopric of salzburg
eberhard II of regensberg
1200 - 1246 AD
ar pfennig
o: bishop with crosier
r: bishop between crosses
19 mm
1.2g

here's one I found on asearch. also note the flattened scraped areas occurring at right angles like on my coin my coin. any one know why these are on some of these coins? weight adjustment?

I've been wanting to pick up an islamic coin, the text is pretty as usual, but this one also has some neat geometric patterns.

Budget-Medieval-Coins

qarakhanid (karakhanid) AE broad dirham
ahmad b. ibrahim (jalal al din qadir khan)
1178-1210 AD
33 mm
4.1 g

this coin is much larger than I expected from the sellers photo, and pretty thin. kind of reminds my of a sassanian coin in that regard.

Nice buy and for a very good price, the Pfennig could easily have sold for twice what you paid in total.

But please change 'of Regensberg' to 'von Regensburg'.
There are quite a few different types of his Pfennigs.

Both incredible pieces. Coin number one is awesome. Coins number two is huge. What more could you want. While looking at the second example of coin number 1. I am trying to figure out what happened to the OP first coin's reverse? Is it the sample coin, has it been recoined? Is it really the same coin?

Looking at the picture, those flat areas do seem like weight adjustments made to the flan before striking. Interesting.

Eberhard II von Regensburg (or Eberhard II von Truchsees as he was also known) minted quite a lot of Friesacher Pfennigs. If you want to see the diversity, there are quite a lot shown in the following pdf which can be downloaded:

http://www.numismatas.com/Forum/Pdf...0Austria.pdf

The section on Friesacher Pfennigs starts on page 51, good background information there.

The issues of Eberhard II cover pages 58 to 62.

I think the minting process produced scyphate (cup-shaped) coins - the edges were then bashed flat

here's a couple of mine showing the same feature

That is an interesting dog on the Duke Heinrich IV pfennig. I think I'm adding that one to my wish list.

Yeah, those Friedrich the Handsome and Bishop Heinrich pfennigs should really inspire a "Worst Portrait" thread!
