There is an example of a YII stamp from the Philippines - I was wondering what collectors of this variety think about it.

No opinion since it's SO far out of my knowledge base.

The counterstamp is not looked like a usual one but is authenticated by a third party. Don't know which one is true - the stamp or the "third party".

Stamp looks rather crude, but that is not unusual for them. It's 5-4-3? The outer arc is blurry.

Back in 1957 there was an article in the Numismatist that condemned all the open topped stamps as being counterfeit. Back then almost any shaped stamp was accepted but a flood of late dates that were impossible caused that re-evaluation. Many stamps condemned at that time were asymmetric with short or vertical arcs.

I do not have access to any of my reference books but I wonder if there is a legitimate basis for considering the crude asymmetric open top stamps to genuine?

That was the reason for the post in the first place.

If anyone have that article somewhere, I'd gladly check it out as well :)

It is a normal 5-4-3 Isabela counterstamp Bob. From my point of view, no red flags at all. I have missed a lot on your posts, advanced Happy Holidays to you guys

Is it real?

wonghinghi Your coin has a stamp that I believe looks genuine. It has arcs that close toward the top and a symmetric clean appearance.
