I think Canada has been proactive, since I could remember and I do think it will pass. Think about how long ago they did away with the Paper dollar America is still contemplating that issue as well as small cents.

Not a Canadian here - but from a brit's perspective a 1 cent piece is worth about 0.45 pence and we gave up the halfpenny in the 80's...

Penny should be long gone. The nickel should go too, but that creates bigger issues with the quarter. One step at a time.

All small change should be gone and we should use Gold and Silver again!

The bottom part of the image doesn't show it, but it is 1967, the last year they made the Penny and Half Penny. I liked the reverse design.
Small-Cent
The half Penny is about the size of a quarter and the one Penny is about the size of a half dollar. Not sure what the composition is. But interesting designs. They were all recalled and reissued with a new currency. Don't know much more about them. Sorry.

The 10¢ coins need to be the smallest denomination coins in both Canada and the US. The 1 and 5¢ coins are nothing but jar and trash material, yes people really do throw them away.

Well! I suppose one could look at it this way,If there isn't any more pennies or nickels, it would make ours worth a lot more,

And if they are throwing Lincoln cents away I could use a few.

I used to get so mad. I worked at a place where the manager would take any foreign coin from the cash register, and throw it into the office trash can. He never did understand why I'd fall over backwards to take the trash out.

And yes. "Find a penny, pick it up, and all day you'll have good luck." I ought to be the luckiest person on the face of the planet. ^^ Most of the times the pennies show damage from having been on the asphalt, but not always. And even if it's a barely recognisable lump of copperzinc... it's still worth a cent. One hundred of them add up to a dollar, and I don't know that many people who will toss a dollar bill into the bin. Though... I might start checking for the dollar coins.

ElleKitty I'm a penny picker also . lets not forget sales tax. I'm sure that local governments would love to round up to the next quarter dollar

Count my wife and I as penny pickers. You would be surprised at how much money you can pick up. Deb and I do something very different with our finds, though. Each year (after I have gone through them) they are counted, then we match what ever the amount is and donate the entire amount to a charity. Our count year goes thru the end of March, just happens to be when we started this. Anyway, just counted before posting this so I could share the total with you and it is $67.23. Not a huge amount, but every little bit helps.

Personally I would hate to see the elimination of the 1 and 5 cent coins. How boring would getting change back with the only minor denominations being the 10 and 25 cent pieces. I am surprised to hear coin collectors supporting this.

Another vote here for keeping the 1¢ & 5¢ coins. Between them they have both of Canada's most enduring national symbols, the beaver and the maple leaf.
If they go you may as well take away hockey and Tim Horton's too.
