There's a lot of talk about NGC pulling the 5 Oz. Satin Finish(PCGS=Light Satin) ATB P-Mint Special Strike Coins from the Set Registry. I'm bummed, as I was about to make #2, one of only 2 people with ALL 5 Satins in Registry(Grand Canyon, Hot Springs, Yellowstone, Gettysburg, and, Olympic)..NGC DID leave the Grand Canyon in Registry, due to high POP numbers(390), which REALLY messes up the set now, as it's just downright incomplete. The official NGC response is basically not enough known coins to warrant inclusion. They added my Discovery Coin OLYMPIC LIGHT SATIN in September, only to pull it out in the last few weeks..Go Figure...probably POLITICS, as some show NONE slabbed by NGC(Gettysburg), and, yet, 14 from PCGS. Turf wars.
I say BAH HUMBUG NGC!
It is clear to me the Registry Sets are about numbers, and profits(ie:, if there's a lot of coinage that can be slabbed, we'll add it to the slot), and, not about TRUE Collections.
The fact that some Satins ARE so bloody rare makes creating a full set THAT much more challenging and enjoyable when complete.
Veryyyyyy disapointed.
All I can hope is enough folks will write NGC, and, they will start either a "Complete with Satin Finish" Set, or, just a "Satin Finish" 5 coin set. They have nothing to lose.
The message I get is "The rarer the coin, the less worthy is your collection".
Final Thought...in this day and age of computers, and, great looking coin sites, why doesn't somebody start a NEW Coin Registry site, open to ALL major TPG's, with no limits, or, bias..you can create your own custom sets with any TPG. Many of us have many coins in Anacs, Segs, and other holders, that, never qualify anywhere, which doesn't do any set making any good. They want you to cross it over, spend money, THEN they'll add it.
Thanks for letting me rant. All I can say IF a coin has a specific label, it should be allowed in some format of a set registry, or, don't bother making the label!

I have been collecting for over 30 years now and I have two questions.

#1 What is a Set Registry?.
#2 What is the significance of it?

If it is what I think it is, like a "CAC" sticker, it would not sway my opinion of the coin in question one way or the other. I don't pay extra for a sticker and I would not pay extra because a coin is on some special list. But that is just me.

Hate to hear that, I do PCGS registries and I think some of the stuff is ridiculous as well. I don't mess with Kennedy halves, but I have seen that in the complete variety set the 1964 SMS Kennedy is required although only 11 have been recorded ever. Funny how that would be included yet a puck that has been recorded over 300 times would be taken out.
