That's neat! I keep an IHC album dedicated to varieties. It's getting pretty full; I'll have to start another soon. I've picked a lot of varieties, still searching for a 1902 die gouge. 1865 DDR will probably never happen.

Yeah--the '65 DDR has eluded me as well. A few of the big varieties I don't expect to find, but I keep looking.

Yep, that's the one! I've seen some being sold attributed, but that would be cheating

I agree, it wouldn't be any fun buying them attributed. That dang DV beat me out on that 1890. I can't find one to save my soul lol.

We're talking about these on the Forum. Google has this place indexed so efficiently that this thread will be a primary result for any relevant search. Like I said, contributing to the greater body of knowledge.

Quote: I've seen some being sold attributed, but that would be cheating I guess there's a market--particularly if someone wants to build a MS collection of IHC varieties--but that's out of my budget, and not nearly as fun. The 1890 S-1 is tough to find! The ~VF30 example I posted was listed on eBay--but there was quite a bidding war. So it's fun to sneak under the radar and score this one. Nice 1902 S-4s!

I don't remember the figure, but it was more than I was willing to pay with the scuff marks on Liberty's cheek.

Nice pickup on the 1890.....Ive found 2 MS examples so far. The 1902 die gouge eluded me for a loooong time. Then I found 2 VF examples in a week. Keep your eyes open, they will pop up every now and then. As for the 1865 DDR, good luck. After looking at 100s and 100s of them, the best I turned up was an AG example. A truly rare variety. I have moved on the S-1 varieties. I think it would be cool to have a complete set of S-1s.

Quote: Variety searching (low grade coins) is more of a personal accomplishment thing to me. I'm just asking if that's the same for you guys. Yep I agree for me anyways, I don't really care about the grade, especially if it's a variety that has eluded me for a long time. Like the so called overdate of 1868/9 2¢ piece, I looked for years and years (more than a decade, less than two decades) when I finally scored one in a multi coin lot, I had 3 more within 3 months. Those die gouge coins like the tailbar 1890-CC Morgan and the pick axe and the posted 1902 IHC are so cool!

The coin arrived today. Given the overall state and a few dings, it's just barely recognizable as the S-1, but for only $1.75, I'm OK with that.

Great news, and your careful studying of varieties seems to be paying off in spades! Congrats on a sweet score off the bay!

A very senior numismatist I know calls you all "fly speck collectors" I got a kick out of that because I like the varieties too.
