I didn't find out too much about it from research but I know that businesses used to do this to pennies for promotion or something. Unfortunately, it's pretty banged up and someone drilled a hole through it, but it kept the penny in nice condition. Anyone have knowledge about these?

There were plenty of these made for various reasons such as advertisements, good luck charms, even as "business cards," etc..

In this case I'm not sure which category it falls into. :-)

I will defer to those more familiar than I.

Advertisement. Google reveals archived newspaper advertisements declaring the Simmons Beautyrest to be a brand of mattress from the 1930s and 1940s. The "only costs 1 cent a night" slogan derives from the combination of the "10 year guarantee" and the recommended retail price. Page from Yonkers Herald Statesman, April 12 1939.

Unfortunately, it won't have. In order to lock the penny in place, the part of the rim of the penny gets squeezed down to fit inside a groove in the ring - just like the core of a modern bimetallic coin like the Canadian $2. So even if you were to carefully tear off the aluminium ring, you'd still end up with a damaged cent that would look very much like this one. So keep it intact; it's worth far more to collectors as it is.

I remember seeing a lot of keychains similar to this one in the late 50's and early 60's. They were old then but a lot of people still had them and used them.

Neat find! How did you come across it? I assume you didn't purchase a mattress in '39? Lol

The Simmons Beautyrest lasted a lot longer than the 30's and 40's. They are still available today.

Encased Cents have been around since 1901. They were often used for souvenirs, and for advertising purposes. A member of one of my local clubs is I believe the son-in-law of the producer of a larger number of Encased Coins, Earl Fankhouser of Fort Wayne, Indiana. In the 1950's he traveled around selling merchants on the idea of using Encased Cents for advertising and then he produced them for them. The club member, Bryan Riker (not sure of spelling) wrote a book on his father-in-law with a checklist of over 700 different Encased Cents he produced. (Earl kept samples of most of them so Bryan had nearly a full set to work from.) Most of Earl's Encased Cents have his name and Fort Wayne in very tiny letters along the bottom rim.

Very interesting, I didn't think much of it before reading your posts. Someone I know had it laying in their attic and gave it to me. I don't want to sell it, but does it have value?
