I love to look at auction catalogs, but I don't know how to get them without paying a lot of money (Heritage wants 637.50 for 1 year). I bought a coin at an auction years ago and used to get catalogs sent to me on a fairly regular basis, but that has stopped. Any suggestions on auction catalogs, who has nice ones, and how to get them? Not necessarily only free ones, but I can't afford Heritage.

I occasionally buy them second hand for $5 to $10 apiece.
I bought an Australian catalogue, 484 high glossy pages, over 2,000 pictures in colour. Cost $10. Half of the auction was in World coins and ancients, most of the rest in World notes and Australian coins. 5,000 lots, perhaps 10% of them were Australian and World gold coins.
$3 million worth of lots sold.

As you would expect, this Australian catalogue series is less numerous with top quality American material, but it is quite frequently offered. It more tham makes up for this deficiency by offering top quality World coins, ranging all the way from anciens to modern.
New price was $40.

I have occasionaly been a successful bidder in this series of auctions over the last 15 years or so.

I don't need to consider Heritage Auctioins, because the the above mentioned series is good enough for me. I don't subscribe, I just quickly peruse the catalogue when first sent to potential customers, and buy a single copy, if I happen to be interested.

I've purchased some from Amazon before. Some of the older ones can be found for about $10 or so total.

Hopefully westcoin doesn't mind me sharing this site that he sent to me many months ago http://brycebooks.squarespace.com/s...Catalogs.htm

Hmmm... I didn't realize they were worth money. I have a few laying around.
I think they are from the 1980s... Can't remember.

I had not thought about ebay as a way to dispose of my catalogs, I just took two boxes full of ones from about 1990-2002 to the local coin show and put them out on the "free, take one" table that they always set up. Should have listed them on ebay and seen what they bring.

Thryn9,I am sure I have more out in the garage, if you want to cover postage I will see what I have and send them to you.

I like the idea of "free, take one", I would be all over that for old catalogs. And I do like to look at old catalogs as well, but I also like to see "active" auction catalogs that I could actually buy from. ebay seems to be a good place to find old catalogs, I am eyeing some now. Don't auction houses want people to see their stuff? I'm guessing that online is way cheaper exposure than an expensive glossy catalog.

Where can someone get current or year old auction catalogs of Canadian coins? I'd be interested in purchasing some for a reasonable cost. What catagory to look under in ebay ?

Interesting prices on that Brycebooks link. I've got several Stack's catalogs from 2007-2011, some of which he has for sale in the $15-30 range. A few years ago I offered some of these on the forum without much interest. Looks like I might have to try ebay.

LOL I just sold a coin to pay for a bound volume of four auction sale catalogues from the first part of the last century!

As a result I added up what I'd spent on numismatic literature (which is mainly old auction catalogues) and it came to ... well, let's just say it's in the hundreds.

On ebay look under Coins & Paper Money ---> Publications & Supplies. Try Canadian auction catalog.

If you know the major auction houses up there try searching those names on ebay
