I was at a Michaels' Arts and Crafts store a few days ago, and elected to pay for my small purchase with a brass Presidential dollar and a Kennedy half. The young clerk looked at the two coins and let out a yelp of surprise. She started examining them very closely, as if she didn't know what she was looking at. She then called for her manager, held up the coins, and said, "Are we accepting these?"

Obviously, she thought they were some kind of promotional tokens. The manager saw the coins, rolled her eyes, laughed, and looked at me. "Ah, these kids!" Then she looked at the girl and said, "No, they're real money." The girl laughed and said, "I've never seen these before."

It's understandable, but at the same time you'd think the managers would train their employees to know what American money looks like, hey?

I've been spending halves and dollar coins for a long time and never had someone not know what they are. Do you have a similar story to share?

My friend was sitting at his desk and scratching on something. I looked over and it was a Wheat cent. I instantly "saved it" but the damage was done. 1945, so not a rare date, but it was a shame.

My story of why I never use those baby sized dollar coins.
Some time ago I was at a restaurant with several other people. Getting up to leave I placed several of those baby sized dollars on the table as a tip. The waitress sort of said loudly, "Sir, you left some of your kids play money on the table" From that day on I just don't want those things.

I could write novels on the subject after nearly 4 years of working retail, but here are my favorite stories:

1. Back in college, my friends and I liked to spend our nights at a few local diners to hang out and socialize. I would typically get a coffee or soda so that I wouldn't be completely freeloading, but would usually only spend $2-4 on an outing. I ordered a coke from an IHOP one night, and paid with 3 SBA dollars to cover the drink and tip. The waitress ran me down as I was heading to my car, and said that I was over a dollar short. She tendered them as quarters, and I had to explain to her in the IHOP parking lot at 3:30 in the morning that they were dollars and they were discontinued due to their similarity to quarters.

2. More recently, my wife and I went to a "taste of the town" festival at the local town square. I brought some loose gold dollars that I wanted rid of because we were short on cash and hadn't made it to the bank lately. I paid for a couple slices of pizza with the coins, and the cashier flat out refused to take them. When asked why, she bluntly said, "These aren't government issued."

3. At my old job, one of the cashiers came up to me one morning with a 1936 Walker half and asked me what it was worth. Apparently some customer spent it, and said it "wasn't worth the trouble" of selling it. I bought it off the cashier for $5, which was a fair price at the time.

I've had a few younger people say, "never seen these before", but never had anyone refuse.

A little over 10 years ago, I was selling, on ebay, an 1858 Indian cent. I received a question from an ebay member asking if it was real as he had never heard of an 1858 Indian cent. I told him it was legit and directed him to a website to verify. He ended up purchasing the coin. His name was Arnold Schwarzenegger.

I manage a movie cinema (in the US) & some of my cashiers have no quarrels with accepting Canadian coins ...but let us get a $2 US Bill & I get bombarded with radio calls to verify it's authenticity... after the note is covered with counterfeit marker.

I have a bunch of stories like this. One of the many reasons I can't
stand dollar coins in particular.

About the dumbest cashier I have dealt with was one that thought a
JFK half dollar wasn't real, and refused to accept it.

I recently had one of these in my wallet, and a cashier refused to accept it. Said it "wasn't real"...

LoL!
I won't let a cashier give me a Canadian coin! I started refusing them
back when the exchange rate of CDN was far less than US. I didn't want
a quarter that was worth 15 cents!

I Save the 'golden' dollars for when I go to Ren Fest. It is great fun when a tavern wench asks "what be the color of your money, Milady?' and you hand her a 'gold' coin.

Some people here will want to shoot me, but I refuse the Presidential dollars when they are given to me. I have had people try to give me 6 of them in change when I would much rather have a piece of paper in my wallet instead of change in my pocket. They are too much of a hassle to carry around (for me!). I would do the same with halves if I did not want to check each JFK I see since I specialize in JFKs. I remember growing up the adults I was around also did not like more than one half in the pocket b/c of the size/weight issue.

years ago I remember as a kid a coin dealer here in canada selling a 1973 unc set with a rare large quarter in it instead of the normal quarter of that year to a kid for the normal price and was told later he sold the kid the error set for the price of the reg set

Well, while living in Norway I also have them refused here every single time...

Even when I visit the US I only encounter all of the above. Only dedicated vending machines for public transport or so accept them without complaint. Shame, really, as dollar coins absolutely have potential and certainly have had a rich past...

On vacation in Florida in December 2013, I was in a fast-food restaurant and the customer in the line ahead of me paid for a drink with two Sacagawea dollars. The cashier said "Are these quarters?". The customer insisted they were dollars, and the cashier showed them to a colleague who confirmed they were indeed dollars. When it was my turn to pay, I asked for them in change.

A few days later I paid for a small candy bar in a corner store with two JFK half dollars. The young cashier exclaimed "What sort of money is this? I've never seen these before." I said "They're half dollars!" He examined them closely, then put them in the till and gave me my change.

I should also mention that on my various visits to the States I've spent quite a few half dollars, dollar coins and $2 notes without any comment from the stores, and have actually had whoops of delight from a waitress when paying for a drink once in JFK halves...

When the UK issued 38mm crowns that were available from banks for the face value of 25p, I used to enjoy trying to spend those. I remember once trying to persuade a shopkeeper that a 1977 Jubilee crown was worth 25p. He said "Well, it doesn't say that on it, so I won't take it!"

Showed a customer my pocket piece--which that day was my holed 1926-S Peace Dollar--since the topic of large dollars came up in conversation. He insisted that was Susan B. Anthony on the front.
