Here is one characteristic of chatting about coins on the internet which really frustrates me. It's the inability to judge the truthfulness (facial expressions, etc.) of the individuals who may comment on a new coin thread. ( A Scenario) A fellow has a so-so coin which appears to be in F-20 condition and many other coins like it have been discussed and grade opinions given so the individual starts a thread asking other list members to comment. Nothing to do but wait, right? The only problem is the normally chatty "Forum Experts" have clammed up and what should have been a very long/interesting thread only gets a few "clueless" responses from. Hmmm, what is the problem. While the thread starter might have been new to the forum they appeared to be liked, hmmm... Then the first private e-mail arrives asking if the holder of the coin would like to part with it for a little cash, then the 2nd, the 3rd, 4th and so on... What is the deal, nobody is saying anything. Then a friend sends a PM or e-mail explaining that the coin is an R-7 coin and a never before seen sub variety. This information came from a layman poster and there are experts, even authors about the coin series who frequent the forum. How do you feel now?

I know this isn't the point, but: what's an R-7?
So are the offers you are getting way low-ball? How low, for example?

The Rarity Rating scale goes from R-1 (relatively common) to R-8 (One known, unique) and oh, let's say the owner of the coin spent $25 for the coin. The offers coming in are around 10% to 20% more than the what the buyer paid, but that's really not the issue since the owner never offered or mentioned that they wanted to sell the coin.
Hope this clears things up. Ben

I find it hard to believe that this would happen. I consider forums in general to be open and honest places. Especially this one. I hope this is a hypothetical situation.
I have posted on grading sections and picture sections of several different forums. I have also been asked on occasion if I wanted to sell a coin I posted but I have yet to be offered an actual price. I would do some research if some one actually came out and offered me a set sum for a coin I had posted. If I received more than one offer then alarm bells would definitely be ringing. I just don't think it would happen

No, certainly not on this forum, it does happen more than you'd suspect. Here are two PMs I received after posting a picture of this capped bust half dollar Dime. It also happens to be a R-6 coin. Chuckle, I know virtually nothing about the smaller denomination Bust Coinage. #1.......................... From: XXXXXXX To: Danegeld Posted: Fri Jun 16, 2006 7:59 am Subject: Quiet Offer That's a beaten up dime you have there, hope you didn't pay too much for it. I collect damaged and holed coins, if you'd be interested I'll give you $30 for it.

I hope you put them on your blocked email list !
something like this would irritate me ! The return emails would be pleasantly blunt about that irritation .

I think I would be tempted to post their email responses on the forum to show for what they really are! A prime example of just the opposite of this is my posting in the error forum of my 1982 DDR Lincoln. Great responses from some very proffesional gentlemen. Ziggy

Well, that's horrible. Let me tell you this though. It happens the other way also. Scammers prey on people like this looking for steals. A new member comes on and posts a picture like that (stole the pic, doesn't even own the coin), then waits for the emails to come in. Picks the highest one and sends a pp addy. Then they're gone. Greed beats common sense quite often. That's why we have the rules we do.

I have never had that problem. I have made comments like when are you sending it to me or in that area but if someone offered me a price I would also hear the alarms going off in the next county just my 3 cents Gary

I have posted numerous (allot more than my share I am sure) coins on this forum asking questions about them especially when I first joined the forum and I was just getting into VAM's and I have never had such an email come from this forum. Most of my VAM discoveries in my collection wasn't much but I really came to trust and respect the forum members on this forum that did help me to narrow down the search for which VAM they actually were. The coin you posted a picture of I have no knowledge of that series at all and if someone was to post a picture asking about it I would usually just pass on commenting because of my lack of knowledge on the series. If it were a grading question I may give my opinion on what I thought it was but anything else besides that I would be out of my league on any answer so I just don't say anything at all because I do not want to lead the poster astray by telling them information that I am not atleast 90% sure of

No, nothing like this has this happened on this forum. However on another more specialized forum, well that's a different story. Also received some misleading information from PCGS list members and I didn't even post a thread (somebody else did) to that forum, LOL...
Take Care Ben

It is interesting that on different forums, Two different people could post the same thread but one may get three pages of replies and the other get one or two replies. I don't understand. In the original post you mention that online people can choose to be who they want. I got thinking about this the other day. I have choosen to be a middle aged guy who loves to collect coins, but can't afford the "good" ones and a viper freak who drives a fifteen year old daytona!!

Hmm Viper, not sure what you're getting at about here? Don't think I ever posted anything which even remotely touched on that subject. Chuckle, If I did I surely didn't mean to, and accept my apology, LOL... Ben

That is terrible, I do believe there are people out there Bonedigger I belong to many forums many with you in fact as well as other family members here. I do know that that wouldn't happen here. I am sorry that there are people like that. I would report them to the moderators and I would even publicly tell this story there as well. You do not have to mention names they know who they are. hopefully the guilt will get to them.
