Bone, I think you were saying that it's hard to judge truthfullness of a poster. hence, people trying to be someone they are not. ( I don't know, it's been a really long week!)

On the other side of the spectrum, I recently acquired a very nice matte proof from a member of this forum through email. He noticed that I was interested in them and sent me an email asking if I was interested in buying one, he had very good pics and a reasonable price so I PP the money to him and received the cent a few days later. I am very happy with my purchase!

Bonedigger: Not sure how old you are but as we get older, so little is worth any frustrations or irritations. Someone in their almighty wisdom made a DELETE button on these key boards and I really use mine a lot. I seldom take to many things serious anymore due to so many medical problems, nothing is worth the waining days left to get worried or frustrated about. You should know by now that on larger forums, such as PCGS, where there are over 20,000 members, that a large portion of those may have mental problems, so don't let them drag you down. Also, there are many out there that worry about every cent so they constantly mention monitary replies to everything instead of just being a advisor or suggestor. From now on why not answer those frustrating replies with a similar rediculous statement. Example if someone offers you $30 for a coin, simply answer "that is to much, can you lower your offer?" Remember coin collecting is supposed to be FUN. Also, educational but I'm to old to learn to much anymore.

I have had the exact opposite happen to me here as well. Earlier this year, I expressed my dismay at having my 20th Anniv Eagle set order wait-listed then cancelled. A member here (who wishes to remain anonymous ) emailed me asking if I ever got a set or a reverse proof. I said that I had not and the member pulled a Don Corleone on me- I was made an offer that I could not refuse. I was offered an NGC RP-69 for more than the three coin set initially sold for but significantly less that the current price of a graded reverse proof. It was offered at no risk to me- it was mailed with the agreement that I would make one payment upon receipt and the balance two weeks later. The member put absolute trust in me with a significant amount of money and I was shocked, surprised, and honored all at the same time If that member reads this post, I just wanted to thank you again- that sucker is still a beaut

It has never even crossed my mind to offer to buy a coin that someone posts a picture of just asking for a grade. Bad form.

Habib I would not call it bad form. I for one have no objection to people asking me if coins I put up in the grading section are for sale. It does not take much effort for a simple "no" reply but I have posted coins I intended to sell to other forum members to confirm my grades before passing them on.

I think it just comes down to being upfront. If someone posts a pic of a coin wanting grading help and I was interested in the coin, the best thing to do is just post and ask if they are interested in selling. If the answer is no then so be it. If I really like the coin, I would add it to my want list and start to look for it else where.
The emails that were sent to you just show people with bad/no morals

Now here is something I just thought of after re reading the original post. I've never had a PM on this forum, don't even no where they would be or how they work. Didn't even know there was a PM thing here. I guess no one would send me one anyway. And as to emails, I delete about 99% of everything I get. Most are advertisements I think but never look anyway.

I have certainly joked a couple of times on these threads after giving my grade opinion saying things like, "if you want to get rid of it send it my way," or "great coin, it would like nice in my collection". I am sure the poster could tell the humor and the fact that I also liked the coin! To send an unsolicited private email to the poster trying to lowball them is ridiculous in my opinion. Sorry to hear that this has happened to you.

That's horrible that someone would want to screw you like that, but the trust is that there are people like that in this world. You should e-mail them back and tell them that you think $30 is too much for a damaged coin, and you'll just send it to them for free because they will have more joy with it than you will. Then just send them a bad picture of the coin and call them an idiot.

This probably isn't what you want to hear but that person's knowledge of the coin was less than the others which is a weakness. Had the others been able to rip it from him he would have then had the incentive to become more knowledgeable. The actions of the well-meaning friend in rescuing him from a mistake only adds to the weakness and prolongs the day of reckoning.
Sorry if this sounds as if I'm defending the others. I'm not defending them or condemning them. Weakness that is not exploited has no reason to try and become strong. Unlike wallstreet, we don't get bail outs or welfare checks for "insufficient data."

Oh yes, the lowball offers actually alerted me to the potential value of the coin. Chuckle, I was born at night but not last night... Also had something similar happen when I was beginning to learn about VAMs a few years ago. I found these really nice Peace dollar VAMS 1923-1G and a 1925-1B in a roll purchased in town. I posted questions on the PCGS list and waited to see what the reactions would be. Just as I suspected they normally chatty VAMers clammed up. I'd asked what one might be worth and got a cryptic answer from a WELL-KNOWN VAM trader. Something like, "Depends on who wants it..."

Interesting Bone. I had the same thing happen in another forum a while back and I just blew it off. Thought it was odd but never really gave it another thought.
Good topic there my friend, watching this one with interest.
