Hello! Today my brother gave me a 3 lbs bag of wheat cents. I was looking through it and found common dates, and I found a 1955 penny with very slight doubling. I knew right away that it wasnt "the" DDO, and I thought it looked like Die Deterioration. What do you think?

Sounds like Machine Doubling, Die Deterioration, or other strike issues. Only pics can tell us for sure. Sounds like a great present btw! Happy holidays.

On the poor man's "so called" doubled die, the die is not doubled, but showing extreme wear. If you look at all devices on these coin you can see this.

Probably if the big DDO was found on a different year, these would probably not even be noticed. The 50's wheat cents were way overused, creating a lot of coins showing heavy die wear, die cracks, die chips, die breaks, and extreme polishing and the list goes on. Keep in mind they are out there is extreme numbers. I found 19 in one roll and there was several different dies represent in this one roll.
The 1953 also shows the same thing, but because of it's year before the 55, they were un-noticed.

you are correct ChildOfTheWheat below is for people that might land on or read this page from the net as you already know it was Die Deterioration..

the famous album place holder for where the 1955 doubled die should go but is not affordable for some collectors is not a actual doubled die. It is Die Deterioration. On any other dated coin it would most likely not be a keeper.

This coin sometimes causes confusion with new variety collectors or non variety collectors.

Note: People also try to sell them as true doubled dies some due to lack of knowledge some to scam new or novice collectors. I see all the time other date coins labeled as doubled die on ebay at shows but note only the 1955 deteriorated by the last 5 of the date is a poor mans double die.
