Hello, I was just curious as to why so many common Barber quarters in circulated grades with high mintages have jumped in price the last six months or so? 1901 (26.50), 1904 O (26.50) 1905 (26.50). The few local shows I go to are trying to sell them at or around that price but they go no where that close on ebay. Barber halves are not nearly as popular but are scarcer and a much better buy.

Lots of preppers buy Barber quarters and Mercury dimes in junk condition on ebay for many multiples of what they should go for. Maybe some right wing website or AM radio show is shilling them up in price, like Glenn Beck did with overpriced gold a few years ago?

Welcome to Coin Community. Nice to have you with us. It's an interesting question, and the first question in return would be about the data sources. It's not unheard-of for mass hysteria on ebay to last a period of months (and I'm only being half-funny using that phrase) and of itself affect table pricing.

Many show dealers augment their business on ebay these days, and if they're getting that money online they'll ask that money at shows. The buyer demographic doesn't change much.

A couple thoughts, anyway.

The dates you mention are not rare, however they are not the most common of Barber quarters. I found numerous examples of those dates and other more "common" date/mint variations in around AG to G going for less than ten bucks and most around or a little more than melt. Even though they may be considered "junk" or culls, they are still classic US coins over 100 years old and to a lot of new or inexperienced collectors are still worth more than melt. I don't see any left wing shilling-up of price here.

Maybe the coins you are seeing at shows are circulated but in better grades than around Good? I personally would take another look at the coins and their grades and do some more research on ebay or with the Coin Dealer Newsletter (if you know a dealer ask to see his/her grey sheet) and try to figure out where the dealers are coming up with these prices. Or, if worse comes to worse, just ask the dealers how they are setting those numbers.

That's good advice...I ask the seller "I'm curious about your Barber quarter here because the Greysheet says X and Numi News retail says X." They normally give an explanation as they see it and it is helpful.
