I am thinking about selling an 1886 S half eagle certified by NGC as MS-60 in order to help finance a new instrument. What I am looking at is a new euphonium with a price tag of $1100 - $1300 with $60 shipping, as seen here: http://www.wessex-tubas.com/euphonium/

My questions are:

1. What can I sell this for in today's market?

2. Would I be best to wait to sell it?

3. Would there be interest in the members on this forum?

I already got an offer of $360 from Jack Beymer, but I'm looking for $450 - $500 in order to be helpful towards the cost of the instrument. Any/all suggestions will be appreciated. This is not an attempt to advertise this coin for sale.

These are somewhat keyed to gold, and have therefore taken a beating the last few months. A PCGS 61 went for $350 at Heritage last month, but that looks like it slipped through the cracks. ebay might be your best bet for results on this one; it's nowhere near a $500 coin at a formal numismatic auction. In any event, it'll have to wait for the new year, of course.

just keep saving your money and hold onto the coin, but look for some potential buyers of the coin, if you save up enough good for you. If you get almost there and cant wait anymore contact one of the potential buyers.

I'd personally hang onto it if it's not going to get you close to your goal anyways. It if your determined to sell it now, try listing it on here or ebay, I'd say those are your best bets to get close to your asking price.

The greysheet quotes $380.
Start there but don't expect a lot more.
MS-60 is NOT a popular grade.

with Kanga... The markets just not there right now for what your looking for. Unfortunately, I'm going to guess that you bought it when gold was higher and paid more? It's happen's to all of us. And again, like I said above, there probably would be some interest here, but I don't know at what your hoping to get for it... Honestly that $360 offer seems about right for a dealer offer. I'd expect right around $400 +/- depending on the eye appeal of the coin

Can you throw a pic of it up?

I don't think anything more than $375 could be expected.

The 1886-S is common in lower MS grades and any MS-60 piece is likely to have lots of marks that reduce its eye appeal. You might actually get a better price on ebay by cracking the coin out and offering it as a raw BU coin (which it certainly qualifies for given its NGC-assigned grade). However, after fees your net proceeds may be less than that cash offer from Jack Beymer.

I would hold onto it and hope the price of gold goes up.

No. I have about $400 in it right now. I'm trying to get a price that I was offered a couple years ago that I turned down because my dad frowned on selling this coin. I need the instrument more than the coin, but now the time has come where my coin is not worth as much as it was. I may take a stab at trying to selling via CCF auction. We'll see...

If I really need to sell it, I would take the $360 offer. The generic gold market seems to be somewhat soft right now and could stay soft for a while especially if the price of gold doesn't recover.

This MS61 sold for $414 a month ago.

I'd sell it to Beymer for $360 and call it good.
