Better pics of both the front and back would be appreciated for us to evaluate.

I don't see any recent sales for Original Series $5's from this bank at Heritage Auctions or Lyn Knight. Maybe someone with Track & Price can share what that site says.

Yours isn't listed in my Kelly census CD that shows 3 listed.

How are you storing this note?

Very rough note with some serious problems. Stains, tears, missing corners etc. HOWEVER, it is what it is and right now it's a scarce 1st Charter period fiver.

Storage appears to have been an issue in the past for this piece of history so I'd suggest getting it carefully inserted and stored in a high quality PVC-free large size currency holder. That will help reduce the chances of further degradation from improper handling and storage. Your note is very fragile and needs to be handled and stored correctly.

If it is as scarce as I think it is, I would get it into a TPG slab.

The seal and charter numbers and faint. Was this a common issue in paper money during the 1860s? Can anyone tell me how many exist today?

The red ink on these things has a tendency to fade over time. Exposure to bright lights does not help either. The note almost looks like it's been exposed to the elements (or my have been washed).

Will search the archives later today and see why has sold from this bank over the years. It's probably scarce, but not an ultimate rarity.

After doing some more research I'm leaning towards your note being a counterfeit.

The Kelly Book lists $5 original series notes from #799 Merchants National Bank as being knowingly counterfeited.

The note is too good to be counterfeit. I think it's baloney that people tell me it's a counterfeit. It's like a slap in the face to me.

Well, you asked for opinion. You didn't say, "Tell me what I want to hear."

Not all counterfeits are bad quality. Some were very well-made.

If it was "fake" is it still worth anything?

OP - Trying to evaluate your note through two low quality pictures, and determining if it is genuine or fake, is like telling a doctor that you don't feel good and expecting him to tell you what is wrong with you without making an examination.

I based my OPINION on what I found in the Kelly Book. Early 1st Charter notes were actively counterfeited and 5$ notes from that bank were known to be in the mix of known counterfeits. THAT is a fact!

If you want to know for sure on your note, then you should send it in for third party grading to PCGS Currency, PMG or CGA. I hope it turns out to be genuine and it grades. If it does, then you will make money.

If it doesn't, it is still worth "something" as a contemporary counterfeit. There are people that collect period correct counterfeit coins and currency.

If I offended you ("....slap in the face") I apologize. I just call em like I see em.
