I found this last night in an unopened OBW roll. Since this coin has never been circulated I am assuming this was caused by some kind of die issue? What could cause this?

Looks like a pretty big lamination. I don't see any evidence of it being scraped off.

No way?!?! Wow! Laminations are something I'm not too familiar with. I guess I'll have to do some research. Thanks for the help!

Doesn't look like a lamination, the "fields in the missing area is too smooth. More likely a strike through

I'm with Conder with a strike through. Laminations are more jagged and you can really tell when you find them. Nice find still. Here's a picture:

You can see how the metal peeled off. On your coin, it's smooth, so strike-through.

I agree with the struck through theory. While laminations are in a straight line, note the rim area. The weakness there tells me something was hanging over the rim on that area. Also under laminations you can see part of the design on thinned areas where the lamination peeled off. I see no evidence of this on the OP's coin.

The struck through theory would prevent the underling strike to not happen. So I a agree with conder101 on this one.

What on earth that big could have gotten in the way?

Could of have a wood chip or something thick . Even a match safety match stick could alter the strike?

It kind of resembles a lamination peel from another coin, to tell you the truth.

Thanks for clearing up my theory guys. Don't want to give out wrong info. I didn't even think about the jagged look of lams.

So, I've been letting this one simmer for awhile. I'm not sure I understand how this could be a lamination peel from another coin. Can you guys explain the process to me on that?

I took a couple more pictures.....maybe they will help. I just recently noticed that the damage/error goes all the way across the coin (from where the "of" should be on the right to the "T" in "United".) Even some of the tops of "U" are gone.

I agree with the strike through theory.
