I know that the reject tray gives back silvers. for those who dont believe, I was risky and put a silver dime in the machine and luckily it came out the reject tray. but I NEVER fid any silver. not once. I was wondering, is there something I'm doing wrong? are there other spots on the machine to look for them?

It could just be that the last person to use it took everything out of it, I wouldn't imagine that many people actually leave change in there. I rarely find anything in coinstars rejects, only one silver dime and a few world coind over a few years of checking

For the record, they don't take Liberty V nickles either. I had a few loose ones that had been harshly cleaned along with a few IH pennies so I thought it would be fun to spend a few. I threw a couple in our change bowl not knowing hubby was going to take it to coin star. Low and behold, he brought back the V Nickle and said, "I don't know what this is, but the machine wouldn't take it". And no, he doesn't pay one single bit of attention to my coin collection, obviously.

It all depends on luck. I've been lucky and have found a lot of things over the past few months (couple Mexican coins, LOTS of Canadian, two wheats, a number of Lincoln Memorials and oddly enough a couple Lincoln Shields bright red as day). However, what I have noticed is that most people pick up the stuff in the reject tray (after all, Coinstar instructs them that it's there), most people retry it...and most people pocket what is theirs the machines just won't accept. Finding stuff is thusly rare; but the larger the population of the area in which you are hunting, the greater the likelihood of finding anything (compare 1 find in a town of population 1000 to every other find in towns with populations in the 10's of thousands).

it's mostly luck. However, I've scored: 1 Shield Cent, 1 2014 nickle, and 1 car wash token. So, it's a safe bet you'll find something sooner or later!

my biggest coinstar find was grabbing a crumpled up torn 1.00 bill... it was 70% complete, so I walked over the the teller (bank in grocery store) and traded it for a whole bill.

Yes, it's mostly luck. The machine also warns people to check the reject tray. Canadian dimes make very little sound when they hit the reject tray, and I seem to find them regularly. I'm amazed at how often the coinstars in my area are full. When they are full you can usually find coins in the upper hopper where they enter the machine. Last night the machine was full, and there was a dime and 5 cents in the upper hopper. Kinda lame to take the coins from the upper hopper I know, but it was there so why not. Oh, BTW

Most of the silver coins go into a dump bin. The machine will not take silver 1/2s (I believe) or silver Dollars & does not recognize most silver coins. The silver that goes into the dump bin stays there until it's picked up by the people that deals with the money part of the machine.
Employees are not allowed to trade regular coins for silver coins so all that silver goes to a bank & not to a collector.
My brother works for Coinstar & he tells me about the amount of silver that goes through these machines. It's a lot.

I always check the reject tray for all machines that take coins! couldn't tell you how much money I find in there, my Dad calls it "Polish slots"!

I'm new to this site, but I figured I might as well mention what I got. I was at the grocery store and didn't see anything in the Coinstar machine return slot, but on top there was a beat up Zincoln (I assume that's the name for post-1982 pennies) and a 2 cent euro, which turns out to be a 2002 from Germany. Pretty cool for my first Coinstar find.

Nothing too special, but last night, I found an average 1980 penny in the reject slot and later on a dime in the hopper. I had to use the penny I found to get it out. BTW, I saw someone using the machine for a cash voucher and the total was about 30 bucks, how much was there in coins if that amount was after the 10% cut?
