What year is it? The rim of the top one just looks wrong, too rough on the top and ends strangely on the near the dots (not to mention it also overlaps some of them). Can you get full coin shots? I have a feeling this is a Dryer Coin you're looking at.

When a coin gets stuck in a dryer it tumbles and tumbles till some one finds it, it pushes the rim of the coin in while tumbling and degrees of it can vary on how long until the coin is found.

The one on the right is from a different working die or a newer and unworn one. You would have to look at other markers to see if it's from a different die.

Posting full pics of both sides and close ups of the area in question along with your question gets better results. Adding the year and type of coin to the title makes it much easier for future searches on the same topic. By the way Bellmaker what exactly is your question? The rim you display is worn PMD as you can plainly see it s starting to fold over the beads.

Pennyman, I respectfully disagree with you on this one. Can not see any indication of it being dryer or spooned coin. The rim surface seems to be rough and that is not indicative of either a dryer or spooner. Furthermore, with either, the metal has to go somewhere. Bellmaker would love to see a close up shot of the rim, flat side . also images taken with exactly the same camera settings, i.e., distance, would be of help. present images were taken with different distance settings.

There are both Small rim beads and Large rim beads present in the 1965 small cent coinage. Type 1 and 2 are small beads and type 3 and 4 are large beads. You will find this similar bead situation in the Silver dollars of 1965 and to a much lesser degree in 1966. To my knowledge there are no 1965 Dot coins as the queen was still alive so Charles w................. Wait way off topic..........

Pacific: Normally there is a difference in the number of beads around the circumferance of the coin to tell between large and small beads on other large/small choices. From the small section of coin that bell(dot)maker, it looks like there is approx the same number if he took the pics with the same magnification. What is the number difference between large and small for 1965? I'm not a small cent person but it would be intersting to know.
