Hi guys, A buddy of mine sent me these pics of a very unlikely 10 Dollar Indian Head Eagle coin... I believe he is grossly misinformed, as he affirms its GOLD, and he says an "expert" told him it's the real deal, even thoug he's not even dealing with an American collector ( I myself am Brazilian, but I DO know a bit about US coins). A few loose looks at the coin tells me its fake. Insciptions are lousy, the indian looks cartoonish, it's way too dark to be gold, etc ... What do you think? Cheers!

The reverse is of a $10 half eagle gold coin - but the obverse is of a dateless $5 or $2.5 gold coin from after 1908. It's an obvious fake and is likely made of copper or some junk metal. Quote: Insciptions are lousy, the indian looks cartoonish

Welcome to the forum. :-) It is indeed a replica. The two things (besides the color) that your friend should note immediately are: 1) there is no date, and 2) the design on the obverse ("heads") of the coin is wrong for a reverse ("tails") of that variety This is what a real one looks like: http://www.coincommunity.com/us_gol...ian_head.asp

Even as a collector not specialising in US coinage I recognise it as a fake.

The only thing real about that thing is that it is a real fake.

This is such a horrible fake, I would put in the category of a fantasy piece.

Did we really have to use language this graphic? What if the poor guy had just dropped a kilobuck on it?

He's merely asking us our opinion on this coin, which yes, is a poor fake.
Even the OP had his doubts..C'mon.
