I recently acquired this 1881 $5 Liberty as part of a wholesale deal. I originally bought it because it was undergraded, but after pulling it out today to decide what to do with it I noticed that there is a rather big die break at the tip of the crown on the obverse. I've never seen a die break like this before on one of these and was wondering if others had seen similar examples before and if so what premium they carried if any.

I see a dent where it looks like it took a hit. Is it a dent or are my eyes playing tricks on me?

No there is no dent, the wedge shaped area above the L is raised metal

The peak of the coronet above the 'L' is raised like that with normal half eagles of this type.
Looks like impact damage below the raised (now) wedge shaped peak.

If you examine the lighting direction and what surfaces are reflecting light, it's clear this is a wedge-shaped cut into the coin above the L. Were it a crack - a positive on the surface - the light would reflect from the side nearer the light, not the side farther away.
