A recent purchase that I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of. Can't wait to take my own images of this one, it should be fun. What did NGC grade it? Edited by Canadian-Banknotes 01/06/2015 6:24 pm

I could see this as easily an MS66 coin, heck it could be 67 with a cheek that clean. The only thing that I cannot tell is what's going on in the lower right obverse field. I look forward to your images CB.

Jesus that's a nice coin! I would really hope that whatever that is in the lower right obverse field doesn't net it a details grade, because otherwise that's a 66 or 67 no question.

4 o'clock obverse makes me wonder... 65/66? Forgive me if its proof like, I dont know much about detecting proof strikes.

Tough call. Those marks at 4 o'clock on the obverse sure look like scratches, and graders just love to hang a "details" tag on coins so afflicted. Another question is whether that's a fingerprint at about the same position on the reverse. But otherwise, it's dazzling.

MS65 I'm not sure if the strike is strong enough to warrant a MS66 grade, but it's possible and a close call IMO.

Ill say MS65, but a 66 would not surprise me at all. That is one gorgeous coin

That scuff is going to hold it from 66 I think, I'll go at 65, probably 65*

I want to see your pics of the scuff before deciding. The rest of what I see here belongs in a 67 slab.

The scuff could also be just an irregular splash of toning, couldn't it? It looks like the same hue as the color on and above Liberty's cap.
MS-66+ would be my guess for this gorgeous Morgan!

Quote: The scuff could also be just an irregular splash of toning, couldn't it? Yeah, I'm thinking it's just an irregular toning pattern. Similar to the ones on and above Liberty's cap. I'll post the grade later tonight, after a few more guesses.

For a coin to get 66-67, you need exceptional eye appeal. The toning behind the head will certainly hurt in that regard. Also, with a common date like '81-S, luster has to be incredible to get a 66-67 grade.
The luster appears decent on this coin, the toning is not a negative, but not really nice enough to be a positive either. The surfaces look exceptionally clean, however, and that may push it up.
I know the actual grade, but I will state my grade anyway... I believe this is a low-end MS66, if the luster is all there. If the luster is more subdued, I feel it's an extremely PQ 65 worthy of a premium in price.

I like it at 66 with the oft mentioned caveat concerning the 4 o'clock area on the obverse.

The coin is in an old NGC holder from late 1987 or early 1988. It's graded MS-65.
