One must realize these were minted privately. The dies were used until they exploded. In fact, I may be wrong, CWT's that are perfect are harder to find than those with manufacturing imperfections....
Keep in mind that all change was hoarded during that time. They were used as change then. After the war they tried to catch up with demand with different denominations. Thus the 2 cents, Three Cents (Nickel and Silver) Twenty Cent and others were used. They even used encased postage stamps. I didn't realize there were so many different types until I checked ebay.
There are ever so many error tokens in the Civil War series that an interesting collection of them can be formed for a relatively low cost. Some of the more common errors, like the OP's piece may warrant a premium if the error is absent ... an early die state.
