My parents won't let me crh halves. Why? Because it's "unreasonable" to get a box of halves since it costs $500. I've tried telling them that it doesn't cost anything, you're just exchanging it into a different form of $500. Finally, they said that I could get two rolls. I tried telling them that it's highly unlikely that you'll find anything in two rolls, but they won't budge

It's a investment and it can be a pain to change them back. I doubt my parents would had done that for me either., still don't have enough liquid cash that I can spare more than $200 at a time. Maybe ask for it for your main birthday or Christmas present if your parents make enough..

Search those two rolls. If you don't find anything, go cash them in and get two more. Repeat until you find some good stuff. After you get enough good coins, maybe your parents will change their minds.

$500 is a lot of money. I'm 42 and there's no way I could afford to do it.

What do your grandparents say?

Personally I would be happy with two rolls. When I was a kid I was lucky to get my parents' change to search.

With that being said, get the rolls. Search them. Return them. Show your parents you can do this responsibly with no cost to them (other than the finds, of course). Maybe they will let you get a box, or maybe they will get rolls regularly enough to keep you busy.

You sound like just the right kind of young person the hobby is in dire need of! If you were my son or daughter I would DRIVE you to the bank! Good luck.......... keep hammering on them !

You got to start somewhere and you never know, something may turn up out of those two rolls. One time I was out for lunch going through the Drive-Thru at Wendy's and I was given a Kennedy half in my change. I asked the cashier if he had any more and it turned out he had $5 I was able to get. When looking through them I found 2 40% silver Kennedy's.

Maybe each you go to exchange the rolls you can ask your parents if you can get an additional two rolls. So each time you go to the bank you can come home with more rolls than what you're dropping off. Also doing it this way won't cost $500 all at once.

Not knowing how old you are makes it difficult to give advice.

I do believe that it is possible for a lot of kids to make quite a bit of money on their own. There was an article in Errorscope about a YN who (with his brother) collected scrap metal until he earned enough to get a 1797 large cent and a dog.

Honestly it's pretty unlikely to find anything of significant value in a $500 box, too. Most of this stuff is picked over. Why not ask them for $20 to buy a handful of 40% silver halves instead of asking them to tie up $500 in the hopes you'll find 1-2?

First of all, I use my own money to crh. Second of all, I'd rather search through $500 to find two 40%ers rather than walking down to the coin shop and buying 2.

OK, well you only have 5-8 years until you can move out and coin roll hunt all you want! Not much benefit asking other adults how to manipulate your parents into doing something they already said no to. If they said no, then respect it and work within the limits they have set.

I was not asking how to manipulate them, I was asking for tips on how to convince them. There's a big difference.

Truth. For CRH, it is not just the coins, it is the hunt. The journey, not the destination. It is not for everyone and that is okay.

I saw nothing wrong with your request. Yes, I am a parent and I know the difference. Perhaps I see it differently than others because my son likes to negotiate, not manipulate.
