Boy do wish there was a resource like Coppecoins.com but for all of the other denominations too.... How do I find markers for this in order to confirm? Is anyone able to verify?

i am not any kind of expert - but I really don't see how that could be anything other than an RPM.

There is a listing for a RPM on a Kennedy half that might be yours from CONECA "Variety vista" Site:
1971-D RPM-001
Description: D/D West
Markers: Obverse is ODV-003
UVC-178
DMR-011
Stage A: EDS (unconfirmed)
Stage B: MDS (unconfirmed)
Stage C: Obverse and Reverse are LDS
It matches very close to an older publication that shows the same die number : The white book "THE RPM BOOK" by John Wexler and Tom Miller 1983.
It looks like the same RPM. Yours is a nice find.

Ready for another "confession of a new coin collector"? Here it is....I have stayed away from variety vista because I don't really understand the format of its listings. I've searched the site looking for explanations of its terms and abbreviations and can't find any. Maybe you can help me? When it says "Markers: ODV-003", what does that mean and what good does that info do me without a picture to compare it to? What are the three stages "A,B,C" and how does that help me? What does it mean when it says "unconfirmed". What are the two abbreviations "UVC-178 and DMR-001" mean. Or even better, is there a site where all of this explained? Thanks for all of the help and thanks for tracking the variety down for me Coop! I learning more all the time!

I don't see that listed on their site either.

But the ODV-003 I'm assuming it means Obverse Die Variety the third one? (They use RDV to stand for Reverse Die Variety)

Pictures, will probably coming in later on when they put them on the site or on a E-Disk. I know they have three so far that I have so far. The Wheat cent Doubled dies on one disk. The Wheat RPM on a different disk. There is also a E-disk for Memorial cents. I'm still waiting for the Memorial RPMs. So when they get around to it, they may put them on the site, or on a disk. It takes a long time to compile these images. Coppercoins have been working on it for years.

CONECA uses a different way of listing their coin. Coppercoins uses just three die states. CONECA uses die stages with notations of die states. They consider a different die stage a different event during the dies life. clashes/polishings/cracks/chips/even new die marriages are indicated. So they may run from 3-9 different notations as the die ages.

"Unconfirmed" Means that no one has submitted an example yet of that die state. The half dollar RPM shows there were two submitted so far and they were both Stage C, LDS die states.

The UVC-178 and DMR-001, I don't know. Maybe someone else can help out with that?

It is important to list the numbers correctly.
Coppercoins uses Date/mint mark/denomination/variety/die number.
1960D-1MM-100 is this die
1971-D-Kennedy-RPM?
This die has a double listing as it is both a RPM and a doubled die. Thus the dual number systems
1960D-1MM-100 RPM
1960D-1DO-001 Doubled die

Wexler numbers are for this die:
1960-D WDDO-001 doubled die
1960-D WRPM-103 RPM

Coneca listing for this die is:
1960-d RPM #100 Or on the E-disk 1960-D RPM-100
1960-D 1-O-III books and 1960-D DDO-001 Doubled die
Crawford Listings for this is:
1960-D CRPM-002 RPM
1960-D CDDO-001 doubled die

There are also Listings for Cherry Pickers Guide (FS) numbers, but I don't use these.

So we note that not all numbers match up attributed dies from different sources. So it is important we use the full number system so we can check on the right listings.

The Blue book by Wexler shares the matching up of numbers for a die in his book:
1971-D-Kennedy-RPM?
But keep in mind that not all listing are in this book. I bought a 1959-D RPM Book from him and it lists 111 in that book of just RPMs. I'll looking forward to his 1960-D listing. It will probably take two books at least to cover all of these die of RPMs.

The Kennedy half dollar Book, An Attribution and Pricing Guide, states:

"The new CONECA numbering system assigns a primary unique sequential number known as the Universal Variety Code (UVC) to each variety within a denomination and series."

AND

"The new CONECA numbering system assigns a secondary, sequential number, the Die Marriage Registry (DMR) number, to each variety within a given date and mint. Those who desire to collect varieties by date and mint can do so with ease. It must be recognized that this number is unique only to a given date and mint within a denomination and series. In other words, while there is only one DMR-1 for the 1964 Kennedy half dollar, there is a DMR-1 for every date and mint in the series."

The numbers are assigned "sequentially" which basically translates into "when they were attributed and recognized. The sequence may not correlate with the date and mint combinations of coins.

Variety Vista currently has 3 RPM's listed for the 1971-D Kennedy half dollar. Knowing the particular Obverse Design Variety (ODV) assists the attributer in identifying exactly which RPM is being attributed since it is obvious that a duplicate RPM could not possibly exist on two different designs as they were hand punched into the actual dies. Certainly "similar" RPM's but also not the "same" RPM.

I have no doubt that the OP's RPM is in fact RPM-001 for the 1971-D and congrats on the find!
