I just received this 1873 with arrows Seated Liberty quarter. The seller listed it as Uncirculated. It looks original and uncleaned to me with light gold toning and good luster. There's a mark above the eagle's left wing and the marks from a clashed die in front of Lady Liberty. I took the photos with the coin in the seller's holder since I have a fourteen day return privilege and didn't want to remove it until I get opinions from others. What do you think? Does this make Uncirculated? I got it for a very reasonable price and would be happy if it's a nice AU. Thanks for your opinions. Paul Bulgerin

I like the fact it doesn't look TOO clean. Not sure if the light toning is original. Hard to see the luster in the pics., but probably just the lighting. Might be some wear, so I'd go AU50.

Here are a couple more photos of the coin which I hope show the luster a bit better. It's subdued, but nice.

Thanks for the grading opinions so far. I mainly collect Ancient Roman coins and am still learning the finer points of U.S. coin grading. Are the AU grades because of the darker spots on Liberty's breasts which indicates slight wear? Are there other areas that show wear such as the tops of the wings? I also am still learning to determine the difference between original and cleaned coins. I've been fooled more than once. This coin looks original to me, but then I saw this 1873 on ebay labeled cleaned by PCGS. This coin would most likely have fooled me. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1873-Arrows...em4ae0253bcc

AU cleaned
What I question that makes me say "cleaned/details" are the grime spots around the reliefs on both sides as well as the hit above the eagles wing on the reverse. Its been dipped and probably quite a long time ago which is why its got that light toning. If you feel you paid the right price (I can see what you paid and its right as rain for an AU details coin), are happy and do not plan a grading submission than I say you're in the right place.

I'm going to take the coin to my local coin dealer on Monday to see what he says about it and then decide if I keep it or send it back.

I showed the coin to my local coin shop owner today. He said it looked original, but he could not rule out the fact it may have been cleaned a long time ago. However, he noticed a series of scratches on Liberty's chest that I somehow missed that are pretty nasty under his higher power loupe magnifier. If submitted to a TPG is would come back "Damaged". So, it's going back to the seller in tomorrow's mail. Thanks again for all the opinions offered. Once again I learned some helpful lessons and it's only costing me return postage.

The strike is not great, there is wear, so it is not Mint State. I would grade it at AU Details, because it does look cleaned

Glad you were able to not lose much on it. I could be wrong but the scratches can also be caused by cleaning, especially due to how much this could have been cleaned when you look at the darker areas.

There is definitely wear, so my grade is AU-53.
Looks genuine to me.
