the first 2 pictures you see an average beat up 1953 dime...

1953-10-Cent-Partially-Split-Planchet?

1953-10-Cent-Partially-Split-Planchet?

And then...

1953-10-Cent-Partially-Split-Planchet?

1953-10-Cent-Partially-Split-Planchet?

1953-10-Cent-Partially-Split-Planchet?

1953-10-Cent-Partially-Split-Planchet?

My only dissapointment is the fact the previous owner or someone along the way pried it open and bent it. The last picture really shows the bend across the queen's bust.

Is the proper term for this a partially split planchet? Or am I way off base? Has anyone seen a coin like this one? All comments welcome!!

It's called a clam-shell split which some would consider a type of lamination error. Too bad about the damage, but still an interesting error coin.

something worries me about your coin rob,the way the reeds look where they split and the displaced metal on the edge of the split lead me to believe it was man made. I hope I'm wrong though.

I don't think this is manmade with the way the reeding is on the reverse edge at the split, the reeding is rounded off on many of them which leads me to believe that when the rimming took place extra metal flowed into the void and created the rounding. As I'm not able to think of any manmade process that would do that. IMO.

When I peer inside, it looks like other split planchets I have. I believe it circulated for a long time with the split along the rim (hence the heavy wear and dings) until someone noticed it and pried it open.

Dollarman....the only PMD I see is where it was pried open and the wear and tear of a circulated coin.

M_d_in_guy....that was my same thought on the rounded ends of the reeds.

Taking pictures of the edge is pretty tricky. I will try to get a better pic.

Thanks for the replies.

I went back and looked at it 3 times before I bought it because I was also sceptical. I felt better when I looked at it with the right lighting and magnification. I paid $25 all together for this coin and the flawed planchet penny I posted plus a nice Struck Through Grease penny. Worth it to me!!

If you get the lamination across the whole area of the coin, two halves will eventually be the result. They fall apart.
The lamination is caused by impurities being accidentallly included in the rolling process of the metal strip, before blanking.

Lamination error, but prized apart slightly to make it more obvious. Perhaps could be squeezed together again between two thin hard plastic or rubber sheets in a vise.
