Hello all, this is my first post here. I have a lot of old U.S. currency that has been handed down in the family. I have always been interested in these, but only recently have I started doing some more research on them. Last week, I attended a coin show and brought a few of the bills with me to show to the dealers. One of them pointed out that one of my bills had a very low serial number. He told me mine was serial number 21. Today I spoke with another dealer and he said that it was actually serial number 2. I did some research, and found an auction from 2006 in which the same exact bill (same signatures, same seal) was listed. The description said that it was the "lowest known serial number for this series"...it was number 4. The price realized was almost $29,000 Here's the auction listing: http://images.goldbergauctions.com/...=36&lot=4404The one that sold was uncirculated condition. Mine definitely isn't uncirculated, but I don't think it's far off. It has a light fold down the middle and a minor fold/damage right below his face. I'm curious to see what you guys think.... Thanks! Edited by swb2013 01/10/2015 9:58 pm

I'll get right on that. It WAS high quality before I had to do all the re-sizing to get it below 100 kb.

Upon a bit more digging, the lowest serial number I found for this Friedburg No. is 4. It sold in October 2004 for $10,350 in MS66.

Would you mind explaining what the Friedburg numbers refer to? This one indeed has Rosecrans-Jordan signatures. Is the number 4 you mentioned different than the one in the auction I included the link to? That one was also number 4 and I see nothing different between my note and that one. Thanks for your help!

A Friedburg number is basically a catalog number used by dealers, collectors, and third party grading companies. Each note has a unique Friedburg No. and can be identified by the signatures.
The number 4, from what I can see, is that same Friedburg No. signature combo as your note. Although the number 4 in better condition, your note would be the newest low serial and the price, if you were to auction it, would bring a VERY strong hammer price.

That's a great note. Be sure to get it into a PCGS or PMG holder. S/N 2 on a 2 dollar is awesome. This one can't compare to yours, but it is a S/N 10 on a 10 dollar. I think it may also be the lowest S/N for the FR#. Thanks for posting.

I agree with Jimbucks... Get that note in a holder a.s.a.p.... For a $2 bill, you have potentially a lot of money in your hands... Very nice note... Keep us updated on you plan to do with it...

Quote: Don't worry, I have this in a holder! What Bryan was referring to was a graded holder from PMG. I would send this in for authentication and grading immediately. I actually just got home from the FUN show, but if you have more notes to post, we can at least get you an idea of the value you are looking at. Don't have my books unpacked yet but it wouldn't take too long. I would be very cautious with going to a dealer until we establish what you have for a value.

Pleased to view the addition by a new member ... and the normal CCF expert help. Wondering why my eyes view serial number 21 ... and the experts say 2? Best of wishes to the OP for whatever happens to the note. David

Quote: Wondering why my eyes view serial number 21 ... and the experts say 2? Thinking the same thing but I don't have my books out yet. Maybe the 1 and the dash is actually a "depiction" of something and not really a 1 at all. Could just be a vertical line with a dash attached to it. Does that make sense?

David,
I originally thought it was 21 too. What looks like the 1 is actually some sort of decorative marking that goes at the end of the serial number. Take a look at some of the other examples of this bill, They all have it.
