I was reading this article at Wizard Coin: http://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/art...n-album.htmlThis line caught my eye: " While most manufacturers have now abandoned use of non-archival materials in their albums, only Dansco's slip cases are advertised as being manufactured from archival materials. As a result, we frequently see coins stored in these albums developing toning around the rims." Searching for examples, I came across discussions on other forums where basically people say Danso definitely tones their coins and some people put their coins in them specifically to tone them. I know Dansco is a forum favorite here, so curious as to what your thoughts are about Dansco not being fully archive safe and causing toning.

Dansco albums still have their place in numismatics.
They were originally conceived with the idea of a collector completing a date / mintmark collection with coins taken from pocket change. Lots of people still do this. For such collectors, it matters little if the coins tone a bit when stored in these albums over a period of decades.
It is reasonable to expect that Dansco have improved the quality of the materials used in their products over the years, as the collectiong fraternity become more interested in the preservation of their coins, and the storage approach used. It is also reasonable to expect that Dansco would not want to change the concept of their very popular products much, because that is what a lot of collectors have become familiar with.
I collect World and ancient coins of all types, and so Dansco products are inappropriate for my collecting approach. Mylar 2x2's and poypropylene album pages are more suited for me, and I think preserve the coins better.

I think it is just poorly written. The intent is to say other manufacturers albums will tone coins.

My coins show no signs of toning, and they are in Danscos. Have been for several years now.

None of my Whitman Classic Albums tone, tarnish, corrode, stain, etc. coins. I've been using them for as long as they have been making them. The Whitman Folders and possibly all Folders will eventually do some damage to coins. They are not made to protect, only collect. I do have some Dansco Albums and they have no effect on coins that I know of. Of course ALL my Albums are in Zip Lock Plastic bags.

Dansco albums are fine, as are Whitman.
However, the album will not prevent toning if you keep them in an environment that can cause toning. Keeping the albums in Ziploc type bags, as suggested above, will help.

Echo a lot of the above. I use Danscos for my date and mintmark sets for various coin sets, but keep all books in a gallon zip lock bag with a packet of desiccant that I replace at least annually. Then these goes into a PVC-free 66 quart storage container from Target which includes it's own larger desiccant box. Never had a problem toning.

Ok, so what's the benefit of having the coins in a nice album, if you then stash them away in ziploc bags and hide them in storage? Might as well just use coin flips and storage boxes at that point.

In my opinion, coin flips in storage boxes are cumbersome to look through. Albums are a much easier way to view (flip through) my collection. With that being said, it could be argued that 2x2s and 20-pocket vinyl pages in three-ring binders are better and cheaper than Dansco/Whitman/Etc. This a good point, but I get more enjoyment from them in a Dansco. After all, it is only myself that I need to please. (I should add that I do have coins in 2x2s and I keep them in Dansco albums with twelve-pocket pages.)

It's the environment around the album that determines if the coins will tone or not... not the album itself. They are not air tight.

That probably cannot be said enough.

For example look how we all wash, wax, clean our cars then take them out in the rain and/or snow. Look at how many people brag about Dansco Albums looking so rich and then hide them away. So many people want an eating type Silver ware set and it just sits there, hidden away on a shelf. So many of us have STUFF sitting on a shelf, never to see daylight, and yet there it is. Same with so many coins. They are put in Albums, the Albums in a Zip Lock bag, then into a safe or safe deposit box. Why not just bury them in the back yard? We are all a bit nuts about something. Why not coins?

Just as a funny point, I don't see how washing and waxing and then going out in the weather is one of the human idiot things. People wash their car to remove mud/salt/debris so that is doesn't damage the paint/metal. People wax their car because they are going to be out in the weather so that they protect their cars finish from environmental damage. Yes it makes it look nice and shiny but it also protects the finish. Of course after washing and waxing you are going to get more debris on a car from driving it but that is why you maintain it regularly to stop it from building up. To say that is a human idiot thing is kind of silly.

You obviously never met some people that have old cars sitting in their garages and hardly ever take them out. I knew one person that bought a car, put it in his garage, kept it clean and it just sat there. Oddly enough with cars, there are a large variety of people. Some never wash, wax or anything to a car. Others baby them as if they were alive. Same with coins. Coins are a hobby or a business and all of the participants do things differently. Why there are some people that don't even collect coins.
