I can't in good faith call this one Mint State. It may well be, but I can't call it that. I think this is my second AU58 of 2015, but a righteous coin.

Very interesting thread. To me I see lots of marks on the obverse, and even a few on the reverse. Not sure about the luster....looks muted, but probably the lighting. Strike looks good. If it's MS, it's low MS IMHO. Quote: If the original poster submits it to one of the big two and it comes back as MS, I will never post here again. That's quite a statement. I hope, whether right or wrong, you would not stop posting...your knowledge is valuable helpful. It's is an interesting challenge though. How 'bout if it comes back MS from PCGS, you pay the grading fees.

There are a lot of marks on it That will bump the grade down. I will say MS-61 or MS-62.

Put me in with the circulated camp. One thing noone mentioned was : the date and mintmark of this coin makes it even more suspect to be circulated and or doctored.. for those of u not real familiar with the series. This date is NOTORIOUS for having sliders or what us old timers use to call commercial unc

I think the obverse may limit this to AU53. I've got an AU55 (ANACS) that has less rub on the cheek. As noted, a lot of these were released into circulation for a short time before being returned storage.

I didnt read everyones posts but the first few people that claim ms-63-ms64 are way off for sure. 1880-o Morgans are VERY RARE in high grades. My guess is it will hit AU-58.

When I first saw this I thought maybe MS 61-62, but MorganGrader's explanation is convincing for me, so I'll have to agree with AU. Very educational thread, and hopefully MorganGrader sticks around.

Should this be moved to grading forum? I'mgoing to follow up on this one, very curious.

I have seen Morgans picture like this one has, with a slight darkening on the cheek like this one, and come back as high as MS63.
