If the U.S.Mint made a cent the size and weight of a dime. Could they make it and not loose money like they currently are on the cent? Thoughts. John1

Hmm.... Interesting idea! The only problem is that a lot of people might spend them as dimes, vice versa.

Nope. Labor is the killer, not material, and I don't think the weight saving would compensate.

SSDD is right. The materials cost is not an issue. Even if minted with some material that was free, like dirt, the manufacturing and handling process makes the unit cost exceed one cent.

Think of how many counterfeits there would be if they were made of dirt. But that would cut out the labor costs!

Quote: Outsource to China! Imagine the ridiculous transportation costs, and the sheer stupidity of a country with at least three functioning mints outsourcing its coins to another country.

Also, vending machines would have a tough time telling them apart.

Quote: The only problem is that a lot of people might spend them as dimes, vice versa. They would be copper color. Thanks for the comments so far. What if the cent was 9.5mm then the mint would be making twice as many units in the same amount of time/labor and material. John1

The Cent will go away soon. There's no justification for the expense.

The country has issues regarding debt that's within the trillions of dollars..
Energy focused on trying to save a coin valued at 100th of a dollar, has no purchasing power on it's own... and cost more to make than the value it represents, is futile and energy wasted...
The demise of the penny is representative towards the rise of inflation.
I commend you for your energy but I personally would steer you to the attention of the first issue I presented...

Quote: Imagine the ridiculous transportation costs, and the sheer stupidity of a country with at least three functioning mints outsourcing its coins to another country. Your kidding of course. They are doing this now anyway. Outsourcing coinage to China would help them possibly stop making all our old coins now. Now if they made the Penny half the size of a Dime, no one could get it mixed up with a Dime. And if they made it a bright Red or Blue, again, no one could get it mixed up with a Dime. And even better if they started making pennies square or a triangle, again could not get it mixed up with anything. See all taken care of. Our Pennies will now be square and blue in color and half the size of a Dime.

Start making a bronze one for collectors (mint sets, proof sets, bags, and rolls). Everyone is happy!
