Hey guys, I have a couple of common date Ikes in PCGS holders (going for a complete MS65 set) but several posts above you say that 1973 Ikes are in high-relief? I've read a bit on Ikes but I don't remember reading anything like that anywhere. From what I have seen I thought only 1971 Ikes were in HR along with 72-73 silver proofs? Just wanting to learn a little bit more! Thanks.

The 1971 and 1972 business strike Eisenhower dollars were struck at lower relief than the Ike dollars that were made in 1973 through 1978. There are no known 1973 dollars struck with the hubs of 1972. 1972-P has three major varieties, which are commonly referred to as Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3, with Type 2 being the scarcest of the three.

In MS-65, the series should be relatively easy to assemble on any budget, with the exception of the 1972 Type 2, which can trade for as much as $2,500 in MS65- depending on eye appeal and other factors.

My advice to any collector of this series- concern yourself with eye appeal first and foremost. The grade should be a secondary concern.

For anyone wanting to collect this series, this is the best advice that can be given. When upgrading the Ikes in my registry set, the challenge becomes finding higher grade examples with even more eye appeal. Since I am almost exclusively an online buyer this endeavor relies totally on good photography by online sellers. Even then, I never know if the coin will look like the one I see in the photo. Usually, though, this isn't a problem. Learning to recognize a good, honest photo of a coin comes with the territory.

The truth about Eisenhower dollars is that even the lower grade examples (MS62-63) can have tremendous eye appeal and/or toning. I'm always on the look out for these examples. They won't go in my set, but they will go in my collection.
