I bought this coin described as an Anonymous Quinarius, but with no other attribution. 14mm. 1.5gm After some research, I believe that it MAY be an Anonymous AR Victoriatus from Sicily mint, 211-208BC. No legend Laureate head of Jupiter right. Victory standingleft erecting trophy. ROMA in exergue. BMC137,C67/1, Crawford67/70/83/166, RSC9/24/36. Can anyone help me with their thoughts on this coin, please?

With the design I would agree that it would rather be a Victoriatus than a Quinarius. But there are dozen different ones and would need to clearly see the reverse design to fully attribute it. Various Victoriati where minted from 211BC-169BC all with the same basic design but with distinguishing marks on the reverse. Btw, Sear does not mention any specific mint for any of them.

Victoriatii with rev. Victory standing, crowning trophy amongst the earliest of Roman Republican silver coins. Basic part of a collection of Roman Republican coinage, and a good way to start in this area.

Now I am pleased! I purchased a couple of Portia Catonis coins from a seller, and because the postage was already paid I bought this one for $10, as an attribution 'test', for me. Because of all of the nice things that you have said about the coin, I am MORE than glad I purchased it. Thank-you. (A.M. - Can't you sleep?)

It's definitely a bargain for A(?)$10, even with the wear on the reverse.

Med. Quote: A(?)$10 $US10, so $A12 (I guess).

Quote: an extended weekend in the states Had a look and it's not only a federal holiday in the USA but a variety of state holidays as well. Wonder how many celebrate 'Confederate Memorial Day' - next weekend is a long one here, with Monday the 26th being 'Australia Day'.

A.M. [quoteT.C. it's an extended weekend in the states that ='s have a good time !][/quote] And you choose to spend it with us. Speaks volumes. Thanks. Trouble is, as an ex-farmer I go to bed when the sun goes down and it went down an hour ago, so I can't see me staying up much longer. As Med points out, our 'long-weekend' doesn't happen until next weekend, so I may stay up an hour longer, then.
