As I understand it, no Coinage Dies were sent to the New World during most of the Peninsular War, so Mints there "made up" images of the new Spanish king -

An 1811 Peru 1 Real

MEXICO

In Mexico, they guessed he looked like this -

An 1811 Mexican 8 Excudo

In my opinion the first must be based on an earlier portrait, while no coinage dies might have been sent people would still have pictures of him.

My circle of 8 reales collectors and I have always referred to the Lima version of the portrait as the "space alien" version however I have also seen it in reference books referred to as both "imaginary head" and "Indian Head". It comes in two formats and adds an interesting type to a full type set. The Mexican coins of 1808-1810 also have great variety in the portraits making determining counterfeits much harder.

Down in Santiago the Chile they guessed Fernando VII looked like this.
From what I have read, the bust was only modified upon arrival of official portraits of the king in 1811/1812.

The Lima mint 'Busto Indigena' are interesting I think, and the smaller denominations in particular quite scarce. Nice coin you have there.

Thank you, Bill. I have tended to concentrate on coins of Chile, but I like Spanish Colonial in general, including those of the Lima mint.

As it happens, I just sold the Peru 1 Real "Imaginary bust" coin shown above yesterday, along with several other pieces from that country. I intend to sell the rest of the 13 piece lot soon.

(Can't keep everything). <sigh>.
