I went metal detecting on the isthmus of Panama recently. I found some decent items, mostly from the gold rush era (1849-1855)- Americans as well as people from all around the world used the isthmus of Panama as a short cut to/from the California gold fields from 1849 to about 1855. Along with the numerous relics I found, I uncovered an 1849 "O" silver seated American dime that looks to be in pretty good shape after spending some 160 years in the dirt. Can anyone chime in with an estimated value? Thanks in advance! Edited by perdidogringo 01/18/2015 9:05 pm

It is tough to tell as there is a lot of bright light in the pictures. But it seems to have details in the high VF range and if it were a problem free it is a coin that would make near $250-$300. If it is declared as a coin with problems due to the time in the ground then it is probably a solid $50-$75.

Can't tell from the pics if it's just overexposed or harshly cleaned. Did you clean it?

The only thing I've done to it is lightly rinse it with water to get the mud off it. Then I took some photos with my IPhone (sorry for the lousy quality), before placing in a plastic protective sleeve.

I agree with dsfreeworld. I don't see any obvious damage, so $200-300 would be a reasonable guess based on the pics. Perhaps more but would need better pics to tell. Nice Find! Thanks for posting.

Looks to be VF-detail, environmental damage from being in the ground for so long.

Amazing find looks like a very nice coin. The history behind it alone and how it arrived in Panama to me adds to its value

Thanks, Santafeboy. I also found an 1848 large American cent and an 1849 French Franc at the site. Hoping to return in a couple of months to see what else I can uncover.

Great find!! If it's problem free, it's worth between $200-$300.

Sure SantaFe.. Give me a day or 2 to take some photos and I'll upload them here. The 1848 American Cent is in poor condition while the 1849 French Franc looks ok (but worse than the above pictured 1849 dime).

Wow nice coin! I just started getting into detecting. I need a better detector though but can't afford it yet. Do you know anything about the goldbug?

Wow, you found the Money Pit. This, like almost every dug coin, won't be hard to identify as such. So, it would get a Details slab, but it's certainly going to retain fair numismatic premium due to its' rarity. The story of the provenance is a selling point in and of itself, as well.

Hi Eagle, I don't know much about the Goldbug. I use the Garrett AT Pro on land and in shallow water and I really like it. I also just purchased the Fisher CZ-21 that I'll start using on salt-water beaches and scuba diving.
