I don't recall if I have ever posted on this coin type before. There is a coin of Venice, specifically denominated as a "mezzanino" that depicts Christ emerging from a coffin. In a recent email thread when I posted it in my electronic store (Ephesus) someone pointed out to me that the imagery very likely had a basis in the Black Death. If I recall correctly the Black Death killed something like 1/3 of the entire population of Europe!! The coin type, not issued thereafter was by Andrea Dandolo, 1342-1354 AD. They generally are small, about 16mm. I have attached an image. neat neat coin type!! Paul

Wow! I agree that is a real interesting type. I haven't seen one of these either. What does the other side look like?

Very nice coin you have there 'paul27613', as per Quote: The coin type, not issued thereafter was by Andrea Dandolo, 1342-1354 AD. It was only a short term issue under Andrea Dandolo because people didn't like the denomination, but it was revived at least once, namely by Michele Steno, see http://astamonete.it/it/asta_numism...__1306_.aspx

The Dandalo mezzaninos can be found but I have to admit that I have never been able to acquire one from Steno.
Of course the book for Venetian coins, Paolucci, is also never available.......sigh.
