Too bad there's glass! I would love a closer look. Warning label: "Heavy, do not drop on foot." Look at all those polishing lines Did not look struck when I looked at it. After a bit of Googling, it was indeed cast then hand polished. Those scratches all over the "mirror" surface just looks really rough. I thought they took more care... It's at the ROM, if anyone else also wants to see the coin in person so you can brag about seeing one of THE Canadian million-dollar coins

Quite an impressive piece! If I figure it right, the actual gold value would be over five million dollars. I would be happy to smoothen the edge for them

Couple rim dings, but I think I could find a spot for it. Sweet. You have to hand it to Barrick Gold. 100,000 grams / 31.1 grams per ounce = 3,215.43 ounces $1,606 per ounce Cdn x 3,215.43 ounces = $5,163,980.85 in today's gold price. Right on Jerry_B.

The Perth Mint has a one tonne million dollar gold coin available for sale, and on public display. You can walk right up to it, and lay your filthy hands all over it, if you want to! It is about a metre in diameter, and 10 cm. thick. It is the equal World's rarest coin (unique), and the most expensive ever. That is, if they ever manage to sell it! In the meantime, it will remain a publicity stunt. Can be found on Google images 'one tonne gold coin Perth Mint'.

Thanks for that sel_691Here is the Perth Mint site with a video of them casting the coin. Beefy. Talk about oneupmanship. http://www.1tonnegoldcoin.com/Would love to have the leftovers from the casting.

I've seen a slide show of the 1 tonne gold coin being made. Cast, then hand polished. I wonder if there are teeth marks on the coin?
Now I wonder whether the reason they have the coin in glass is because people might try biting the coin. I mean, you can't just grab and make a run for it, it's on the second floor.

Quote: What would ICCS grade it? If a collector owned it, he'd probably wait till he had another 99 coins to submit, so he could get the $6.50 discounted rate at ICCS.

100 Kg = 220 pounds. I guess you don't slip it under your trench coat with one arm and walk off with it!
