Hi,

I am really having a hard time figuring out what this coin is. I've looked through the 2015 US Coin Digest at the Colonials and don't see it there. However, it looks to have Asian markings possibly, but it's definitely not legible English, I felt I had to check the book for Colonials anyway.

It is a mystery to me, so if you can point me in a general direction of research or can tell me what this is I'd welcome the help.

Thank you,
~Amy

Please post larger/clearer picture, so that people can see the object well and give you the best feedback.
From what I can see, it is not a coin but some sort of medallion/token.

I know we've seen one or more of these posted here before. Can anyone find the old thread?

Old thread one, old thread two, old thread three.
I don't think there's a firm conclusion, unfortunately.

I pulled one out of the junk bin at my local coin store. I found some info that it is from a pirate type game at Barnes and Noble. Don't remember exactly where, I think on one of the metal detecting/treasure forums.

Edit: Trying to retrace my steps. The last link has some more information.

I've also got one of these things. It's definitely not a coin. And considering how common they seem to be, it's probably from North America.

The consensus on the MD forums is that it's a game piece, but I couldn't find anyone outright posting a nice clear pic of the game-piece-coin and saying "Here is the piece from the game, as you can see its exactly the same as our mystery piece". I also note that several different pirate-themed board games and information packs are alleged to contain one or more of them.

All I can say for sure is, there isn't a genuine old coin with this design. So if they're marketing these as "replica pieces-of-eight", they're lying. I think we can also say, given the sheer number of them that turn up here and elsewhere, that they are or were mass-produced.
