Hi, I'mconsidering purchasing a catalogue guide for values,
However id like to learn how they come to these values first

So far ive only used ebay sales as a reference, although difficult due to limited items.

if I could get any advice on these guides or where to start, that'd be great

thanks

Catalogues show retail prices.
And the prices seem to be circa 2009 which was about the top of the market.
Prices have come off since then.
Good for reference.
But in terms of real value much better to look at what stuff is actually selling at at auction etc.
Check Numisbid Heritage Noble's etc.
Watch your top knot

Catalogs around the World all seem to show the values at the very top of what the coin may get at auction.
The usual (mostly right) allegation is that the prices were obtained from auction records.

I normally take catalog prices with a grain of salt. It is common but not always, for a dealer to offer a coin at half of the catalog price for grade.

If you are considering to buy an expensive item, by all means consult catalog prices as PART of your value search, but don't rely on that resource only for your value / price information. Check all other price / value resources to get the clearest idea of what an item may be currently worth.

The cataloguer goes to one or more specialists and asks for an update.
That along with auction results generally determines the listed value.

Hi Matt, I think the best catalogue out is what you have been using, past sales on ebay. All in all, it gives you a darn good reference guide of what things are really worth

Generally the prices quoted in the catalogs are what you would expect to pay if you bought the item retail.
This includes dealers costs and profit margin.

As a general guide I would say that the actual value of the item is about half its catalog price.
