Highly unlikely that it's a fake.
It just doesn't have enough value for someone to fake.
As for a cleaning, that's definitely a possibility.
The surfaces are too even in toning which is dull and lifeless.
Probably has been dipped too much.

weight it. Then get a a good magnet. Like the kind you can rip from old hard drive. To me the magnet spots a lot of fakes, if the magnet doesn't stick at least its silver hopefully.
