I think too much detail is gone to call this anything but an XF
If this is an AU 58 I got myself an AU 59.99

But I have seen that the few French coins graded allways seem to be generously graded so I am not sure my general grading notions apply to french francs

I wouldn't say anything more then an AU50. Looks almost like it was lightly whizzed but not sure.

Can't help on this one. I'm not even remotely familiar with French coins, so have no idea what detail is lacking or worn. Still, it seems doubtful that this coin is so close to uncirculated.

In my opinion, NGC is very weak with foreign gold, and knows nothing of European grading standards. The pictured coin is no more than aEF in Europe, EF45 in Sheldon terms.

Superdave you are exactly right
I would grade it mid XF range for two reasons
First the shield on the reverse of the coin has three fleur de lis and I do not know what flower that is in english (lilly?)but they should all three have a full central nerve and the bottom one is gone completely

Second there is virtually no original striking lustre left which drops it also below AU range

My XP pro and photoprogram seem to have a lot of trouble to save a bitmap file as a jpeg and rename it to a name without spaces
I manage by overwriting a redundant photofile so I will show the scan of the reverse of the coin I got which is I think an AU and will show a pic of the reverse
Note that it is the rare Q mint

Well the file was refused so I suppose XVIII counts for special signs
Does not make sense since the reverse was accepted

Ok I try to post the jpeg of the bitmap
Very strange I have to add JPG manually by changing the filename
