I'm tired of seeing this guy's merchandise coming up in my searches recently. Anything we can do to stop him? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1867-LIBERT...em2c9651c898New seller since a couple months ago, and only sells fake Indian cents. Also, to anyone that justifies a seller's product because "they have good feedback and every buyer is happy", this is exactly why that is not true. People need to be careful when buying coins and form opinions on their own and not take other buyers' advice as the end all be all.

This seller has been discussed here before. Would have thought that ebay would have removed them by now, surely they have been reported.

Sadly, Mike, the only way people learn is to make mistakes. As much as we of the CCF want desperately to prevent folks from making bad purchases that is not possible. Except, perhaps, through education. And that often happens after the fact.

We may want to try a tack I'm trying with another fellow in one of The Other Forums. Six Step Plan For Killing Counterfeits on ebay:Step 1: Someone buys Counterfeiter's coins. Step 2: That Person sends them to The Black Cabinet for verification. Step 3: After genuinely confirming they're fake without a shadow of a doubt, I write Person an affidavit in my capacity as Curator of The Black Cabinet, certifying this fact in Good Faith under penalty of Perjury. Step 4: Person files an SNAD claim and submits my affidavit as testimony, making it clear that they cannot send the coins back given Counterfeiter's history as it would be a violation of the Collectible Coin Protection Act to do so. Step 5: ebay then asks Person to destroy and discard the coins and certify it has been done and the fakes meet Justice. ("Justice" is the name I've given the COPY stamp.)Step 6: Person gets their money back and Counterfeiter is out a fake. Epilogue: The fakes are effectively destroyed and taken out of circulation after they get photographed, cataloged, and put up on The Black Cabinet with a mention of where they came from to help combat these scams in the future. With luck -- provided the frustration doesn't hit them first and they give up -- the Counterfeiter gets NARU'd. The first test case for this plan of action is going down this week (a cast counterfeit that was re-listed on ebay after the seller was made well aware it was a fake). I'll keep everyone informed of how it works out.

Or like myself, buy a counterfeit and post it on a coin forum. People state it is a fake so I file a claim and get my money back. It gets posted on forums so people can learn from it.

ebay's pocketbooks will have to be hit hard before they start taking this seriously. Bottom line.

It's not enough to say a coin is a fake. To help keep other people from making the same mistake we need to be told WHY it is a fake. What are the diagnostics that we should look for? If I got my "nose out of joint" at some seller I could easily harm his sales. It's easy enough for me to say coins sold by Seller X are fakes and posting that all over the numismatic sites. And if you're going to send a coin out for authentication can you get the process completed in the 30-day SNAD window? I'm sure you can't with the respected TPG's. I'm not familiar with "The Black Cabinet" and it's reputation. Addendum: I went to the The Black Cabinet site. Looks nice but I see no credentials. The people behind it need to tell me SOMETHING that would give me reason to trust them.

It always stuns me to see the number of feedbacks some of these buyers have that win these auctions. I have to wonder how much of their collection is actually cheap chinese junk. Education is the key to collecting success. Steve, I like your idea.

@kanga - Just so there's no confusion, the person behind The Black Cabinet would be me so... Second generation numismatist, long time counterfeit collector, and trained librarian. (Among other things.) TypeCoin971793 is also a contributing cataloger, presently working through a stack of modern counterfeits he obtained from China.

I took the time to report all of the seller's fakes and even some that were sold. This is a constant battle to be waged, but I feel it's worth the effort. It's one small way to help the hobby that's been so good to so many. It does help to see fellow coin enthusiasts band together in combating these scams.
There are ever so many scams going on around us. The coin scammers are peanuts compared to other avenues. To avoid getting off-topic, I'll not now step on that soapbox ....

why don't we start a class action against ebay? If we generate enough signatures I have the attorney contact. we can sue them on grounds of negligence among other things. They have a responsibility to provide a safe and trusted marketplace and they fail at that. As Superdave said, a hit to the pocket is what it will take so why don't we muster the numbers and make it so?

I agree with you, dsfreeworld. However, I do believe that deeper pockets than ours need to lead the way. While the CCF has goodly numbers, IMHO, the TPGs and numismatic organizations should lead the charge.

Not sure a Class Action would work with their latest TOS. Didn't they add in a waiver clause last year?

If ebay got their feathers ruffled enough, is there a chance they would/could prohibit the sale of coins altogether? Would that be a good thing or a bad thing? Maybe a good poll question. I know some auction sites don't allow coin sales.
